If Nolan’s Odyssey pulled in Achilles, it would be a curveball because Achilles is dead before the poem starts.
The Achilles Scene in the Original Odyssey, in Book 11 – The Nekyia, Odysseus journeys to the Underworld and meets the shade of Achilles. Odysseus tries to comfort him, saying he must rule over the dead.
Achilles shuts that down with this line: "Better, I say, to break sod as a farm hand for some poor country man, on iron rations, than lord it over all the exhausted dead."
Odyssey 11.489 491, Fagles trans
Odysseus is bleeding sacrificial animals so the dead can speak. Achilles’ ghost drinks the blood, talks to Odysseus, and asks about his son Neoptolemus. It’s bleak. The greatest Greek hero says being the poorest alive is better than being king of the dead.
Why it would be the most surprising include in Nolan’s Odyssey: The Odyssey is post-Trojan War. Achilles died at Troy. Including him means Nolan would have to do a full Underworld sequence. That’s just wild, it’s a horror story in the middle of an adventure epic.
Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness in the world. It has been blinding people for at least five thousand years. Ancient Egyptian medical texts describe it. Greek and Roman doctors knew it. For most of human history, crowded civilizations could not escape it.
The disease is simple. A bacterium spreads through dirty hands, flies, and shared cloth. Each infection scars the eyelid a little. After years, the eyelid turns inward. The lashes scrape the eye with every blink. The cornea clouds. The person goes blind.
In the mid‑1990s, trachoma had blinded several million people worldwide. Entire villages had grandparents who could not see the faces of their families.
There was no miracle cure. Antibiotics helped, but they did not solve it alone. What worked was dull, repetitive work. Clean water. Face washing. Latrines to keep flies away. Small surgeries done by trained locals using simple tools.
Health workers went house to house teaching parents to wash children’s faces every day. Again. And again. For years.
By 2023, trachoma was no longer a public health problem in 17 countries. Globally, the number of people at risk had fallen by more than 90 percent.
The bacterium still exists. No vaccine defeated it. Humans defeated it with soap, water, and patience. Millions kept their sight. Almost no one noticed.

I’m so upset…
My Kindle is fifteen years old. It still works fine, and I want no other.
I read a lot, and this is the only e-reader that doesn’t hurt my eyes. None of the new models have a screen that so perfectly mimics paper. And now Amazon is forcing me to buy a new one. 😡
I don’t need a touchscreen or sound, and I definitely don’t want adverts! 🤬
The timing couldn’t be worse either… I can’t afford it right now. ☹️
I guess I won’t be buying more ebooks for a while... I’ll just have to read the ones I already have.
