@GavinCoote Like many others who've commented my background isn't elite (neither of my parents went to uni, dad didn't even finish high school, he was a labourer and mum a nurse) but in the UK at least, the privately educated make up around half of all journos. No idea who's on $100k though!

Sometimes I just wanted to gorge on beautiful images of people I didn't know with jobs that seemed unimaginable to me. Sometimes I dived into articles that enlarged my world view well beyond anything I ever learnt in the classroom. (2/3)

Growing up, reading magazines felt like the biggest indulgence to me. I'd feel giddy about the pages I had yet to turn – of the ideas and knowledge and inspiration that lie waiting, sandwiched between my hands. It was my portal to a world beyond the small city I grew up in. (1/3)

Dispatches from Cartagena, #Colombia: one in every, say, 10 people sporting a mask, almost every store is out of hand sanitiser, one bar was shut last night & one enforced a cap on punters (due to a public health decree) but otherwise life goes on as normal. #coronaviruscolombia
