In a difficult and dangerous world, a decade on from Brexit, there is a risk that Britain loses the confidence to lead and stand up for its values.

I’m not prepared to let that happen. It is more important than ever that Britain stands for something.

We have called for years for a two-state solution in the Middle East, but we must recognise that those words are meaningless unless we back them up with action.

For too long, we have been hesitant to act, fearful of being accused of being anti-Israel.

Today we are announcing carefully judged, targeted steps that are not aimed at the Israeli people, but at the unacceptable policies of the current Israeli government.

The suffering of the Palestinian people is a scar on the conscience of the world. Innocent Palestinians, including children, continue to be killed in Gaza. And there is still a humanitarian crisis, with far too little aid getting in.

The scale of destruction is hard to comprehend. More than 70,000 people lie dead - at least 20,000 of them children. Families and communities have been torn apart. Millions displaced. And the population of Gaza is now penned into just one third of the territory.

I know that people across the UK feel very deeply about this issue - and so do I.

Before I became Prime Minister, I said our country’s response had been too slow and simply not good enough. That’s why I committed to changing the government’s approach.

I will not stand by as the horrific suffering continues to grow and the prospect of a two-state solution - the best hope for peace and stability in the region - comes under attack.

More settlements have been approved under the four years of this Israeli government than in the previous 20 years. The UN has reported more than 1,500 incidents of settler violence so far this year, aimed at driving out Palestinians. And the situation is growing worse, fast.

The Israeli government has now approved 104 new settlements since it took office in December 2022, and ahead of the October elections in Israel, it is allowing tenders for the construction of the E1 mega settlement to go ahead. This would cut a swathe through the heart of the West Bank - snuffing out the hope of realising a two-state solution. It cannot be allowed to happen.

That’s why we are announcing a new package of tough measures to put pressure on the Israeli government:

First, we will ban the trade in goods with illegal settlements in Palestine.

Second, we have formally changed the view of the British government to say for the first time that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory is unlawful - independent of, but in line with, the conclusion of the international court of justice.

And third, we will sanction individuals and companies that support, facilitate or profit from illegal settlements. That includes any businesses or investors that take part in the construction of the E1 settlement.

In addition, we are announcing a new package of desperately needed humanitarian aid to Gaza.

We are taking these steps because it is the right thing to do.

I have condemned the monstrous terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 in the strongest possible terms - and continue to condemn Hamas. However, it does not justify the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza or the West Bank.

The measures we are taking are about targeting illegal settlements and increasing the pressure on the Israeli government to change course. We are not imposing sanctions on Israel as a whole, which would punish the Israeli people, many of whom disagree with their government’s position.

The Israeli people are not responsible for the actions of their government. And nor is the Jewish community in the UK. Blaming British Jews for the actions of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is wrong, plain and simple. And it is antisemitism, plain and simple.

I met the representatives of the Jewish community just last week. I know the fear they live with day by day. My government will stop at nothing to ensure they are safe and to stamp out antisemitism in every part of our society.

The measures we are announcing today are about protecting the only solution that could see the Israeli and Palestinian people living side by side in peace and security - something that people up and down the UK desperately want to see.

The government I lead will keep working with our partners around the world to keep that hope alive.

CLAIM: Michael Jackson effortlessly bought his way out of a trial over abuse claims by Jordan Chandler in 1993.

TRUTH: The father of the 1993 accuser, Evan, describes in his brother’s book All That Glitters how he and his lawyers used intimate strip search photos of Michael to “put the squeeze on” during negotiations. They wished for Michael to pay “gobs of money to make the whole thing disappear,” using disgusting and devious tactics to make it happen. Larry wielded these graphic photos of an intensely private man, and a civil case that could drag those photos into a public file or a tabloid, tightly in his grasp. Aside from that, Michael would have been subjected to humiliating questioning under oath about the description in court. Evan and his lawyer gleefully conclude the strip search is a fluid, un-falsifiable “no-loser” even if his claims were wrong.

As events unfolded, Michael’s motion for a gag order over the case was denied. His team lost all control over the narrative. Larry Feldman was legally free to leak unverified, highly sensitive “lewd evidence” directly to the tabloid press, which would have severely damaged Michael’s career and reputation before the trial began. In real life, Michael suffered physical stress, panic attacks, and sleep deprivation from the unchecked media circus surrounding the allegations, forcing him to cancel remaining dates of the Dangerous tour. Evan and Larry now held the cards to Michael’s livelihood and health. The campaign would continue, losing him several times more in lost revenue than the cost to settle. Evidence from the lawsuit was permitted to be handed over directly to the District Attorney. For Michael, fighting the civil case meant more evidence was actively being given to Tom Sneddon to build a case against him.

Civil and criminal cases play by different rules, and that difference is what forced Michael between two bad outcomes. In a criminal case, the accused is allowed to stay silent. Prosecutors have to build their own case. They cannot question him for hours, force him to produce private documents, or preview how he will defend himself. A civil lawsuit does not work that way, having much looser discovery laws. To keep the case from bankrupting him, Jackson would have had to sit for deposition, turn over Neverland visitor and employee records, and answer questions under oath. Once that material existed, the judge allowed prosecutors under Sneddon’s office to see it. The civil case became a back door into the criminal investigation. The prosecution gets to see exactly what the defendant will say, how they will react to certain questions, and what their narrative is. This leaves the prosecution to build around that months in advance, with knowledge they shouldn’t have.

That left him two bad options. He could plead the Fifth in the civil case, which a civil court perceives as an indicator of guilt, or endure hours of questioning and hand the government a roadmap of his defense strategy, timelines, and explanations. A long deposition creates a thick transcript in which tired or imprecise answers can later be called lies. In addition, records, documents, and possible new witnesses would be given to the prosecution before any criminal charge is even filed. Either choice would hurt his case. That is why his lawyers tried to freeze the civil case until the criminal investigation ended, and why losing that fight mattered. He would incur a negative outcome, so long as he continued to fight the allegations legally. Evan’s lawyer understood these facts perfectly, which is why he proudly proclaimed, “It’s over, Evan. It’s a done f*cking deal!”

With access to Neverland’s private employee and visitor records, the prosecution could track down disgruntled ex-employees who had been fired, had financial grievances, or were willing to sell fabricated stories to the tabloids and prosecutors for a payout. This would have turned people against Michael and effectively built the criminal case with potential witnesses months before they legally should be able to. Remember the Neverland 5: 5 ex-employees accused Jackson of misconduct, arising from the ’93 lawsuit, were found to have acted “with fraud and malice” against the singer, eventually being ordered to pay $1.4 million in legal damages. They collected hundreds of thousands of dollars by selling their shocking, sensationalist stories to the press.

Moreover, Neverland Ranch had been explicitly built as an escape from a world Michael felt hunted by. By opening up the inner workings of his home to public scrutiny, the court effectively destroyed the one place on Earth where he felt safe, shattering him emotionally. It would also put families and children who had visited, some of which were sick, under intense media and police scrutiny to find new victims, which would have upset Michael. Law enforcement was described as “telling outrageous lies” and using “any device to generate potential evidence” against Michael, after being left “scrambling” for any substantiation. To this day, no physical evidence was ever found of abuse. Jordan was the sole, uncorroborated accuser of the saga after dozens of intensive interviews of child visitors and their families to Neverland. This is a near-impossibility because a criminal of that nature compulsively accumulates hundreds of victims, especially considering that Michael operated an amusement park for children.

Michael Jackson vowed to fight the allegations, proclaiming that he’d “endure to prove my innocence” and that he had “been strengthened in my fight to prove my innocence.. by the knowledge that I am not fighting this battle alone. Together, we will see this through to the very end.” However, his odds became stacked against him. Evan Chandler, and his legal team, had quickly and stealthily backed him into a corner. They wanted a payout. To the general public, it looked as if Michael had silenced them with money to make the whole thing go away. It was actually the other way around.

In an extraordinary admission in the image attached, Evan went to the police and made the accusations public not because he allegedly learned his son had been abused, but because Michael’s team rejected his demands for a $20 million multi-picture screenplay deal. In response, Evan and his team led a scorched earth campaign to destroy his reputation — fundamentally making the saga a case of extortion. He did not want to put an alleged predator behind bars, instead aggressively pushing a civil lawsuit for monetary damages first. A criminal case would allow Jackson to clear his name, but to the celebration of Evan and his team, the civil lawsuit was allowed to come first, and unprecedentedly, that evidence was shared to criminal prosecutors.

RELEVANT: Evan Chandler says in a phone call to Jordan’s stepfather, “This attorney I found, I interviewed several, and I picked the nastiest son of a b*tch I could find. Once I make that phone call, this guy is just gonna destroy everyone in sight in any devious, nasty, cruel way he can do it. And I’ve given him full authority to do that.”

“It’ll be a massacre if I don’t get what I want.”

“If I go through with this, I win big time. I will get everything I want and they will be destroyed forever.”
