In 2020, scientists in the Netherlands reported a previously unrecognized pair of salivary glands located in the nasopharynx — the space where the nasal cavity meets the upper throat. These structures, visible on specialized PET/CT scans and confirmed by histology in cadavers, appear consistently in all individuals studied and are situated near the torus tubarius. The tubarial glands are believed to help moisten and lubricate the upper throat. Because they had not been identified before, they were not routinely spared during head and neck cancer radiotherapy, and higher radiation doses to this area were associated with greater post-treatment side effects such as dry mouth and difficulty swallowing. Recognition of these glands may lead to adjusted treatment planning that better protects them and improves patient quality of life. Study:
