Insecurity in northern Nigeria is no longer only a security problem; it is becoming an economic tax on almost everything produced there.

In some farming communities, armed groups demand illegal levies before farmers can access their land or harvest crops. Elsewhere, attacks and kidnappings have pushed farmers off fertile land entirely, reducing production.

Businesses face another layer of pressure from multiple taxes and expensive credit; a recent CBN survey ranked taxation, insecurity and high interest rates among firms’ biggest constraints.

The chain reaction is straightforward: less farming means less food, higher transport and security costs raise prices further, and investors become reluctant to put money into areas where assets and workers may not be safe.

So insecurity eventually shows up in the market as higher food prices, fewer jobs and weaker investment.
