#ONStorm#ONwx Will we see another northern lights show tonight?
📅 Friday, October 11, 2024
Good morning! I hope you were able to catch last night’s incredible northern lights display—it was truly one for the books!
As expected, after such a mesmerizing show, our inbox and comments have been flooded with one question: Could the auroras make another appearance tonight?
The answer isn’t as clear-cut as we’d like. While geomagnetic storm conditions are still ongoing, they aren’t nearly as intense as they were during the peak of last night’s event. The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is predicting a possible G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm this evening into the overnight hours. But remember, space weather forecasting is far from perfect—it gives us a general idea, but nothing is guaranteed.
So what does that mean for us? There’s a chance that the northern lights could be visible again across parts of Southern Ontario tonight. However, it likely won’t be anywhere near as breathtaking as last night’s show, which turned out to be one of the strongest we’ve seen in decades—maybe even rivaling the storm from May 2024!
If we do see anything, it’ll probably be similar to Sunday and Monday night, with the auroras staying low on the horizon and appearing much dimmer. Don’t expect an overhead display this time. If we get lucky with a few ‘substorms,’ we could still see brief bursts of intense aurora activity. You will also need to get away from any light pollution as it isn’t going to be strong enough to be visible in areas like Downtown Toronto which we experienced last night.
The biggest hurdle tonight will be cloud cover moving in from the west, starting early this evening. The clouds will stretch from Lake Huron through the Lake Simcoe region and into the Ottawa Valley. While it won’t be widespread and shouldn’t last all night, there will be patches of clouds that could make viewing more challenging. It’s definitely not the perfectly clear skies we enjoyed yesterday, but there should be enough breaks to offer a decent chance for aurora viewing.
As always, we’ll keep you updated throughout the evening and let you know the best times to head outside for a chance to see the northern lights. Stay tuned for further updates!
