"Into the Groove" was released in 1985 (track from the film Desperately Seeking Susan and single that became Madonna's first UK #1). On July 13, 1985, she took the stage at Live Aid in Philadelphia (JFK Stadium) and delivered one of her most iconic performances.
Thank you to the thousands of City workers who kept New York running throughout the Knicks’ Finals run as well last night after yesterday’s celebrations.
To the members of the NYPD, FDNY, EMS, DSNY, DOT, and every City worker who showed up, did their job, and helped keep New Yorkers safe: I cannot thank you enough. Whether you were responding to emergencies, staffing events, directing traffic, cleaning our streets, or working behind the scenes in ways most people never see, your dedication made this historic moment possible for millions of New Yorkers.
By the time many of us woke up this morning, the city was ready for another day because of your work. I join millions of your fellow New Yorkers in saying thank you.
Madonna is rolling out one of the most ambitious and complex eras of her career, backed by 360-degree partnerships with major brands and collaborators. The idea that her main goal is to break streaming records is almost absurd, what a boring objective that would be for someone like Madonna.
Her goal has never been just numbers. It's about pushing boundaries, reminding people what fun looks like, what art can be, and what refusing to give up looks like after four decades in the spotlight.
The people making shallow claims about streams seem to ignore one simple fact: her label, her brand partners, and her collaborators all know exactly what her streaming numbers are. They knew them before signing on, and they know them now. Yet here we are, watching one major partnership after another come together.
That alone should tell you this era was never about chasing streams. It's about creating culture, conversation, and spectacle.
And here's the uncomfortable truth for a lot of people: Confessions II already succeeds on its own terms and it's not because Madonna adapted to the modern pop landscape but because the modern pop landscape adapted to Madonna yet again. For over forty years, the industry has repeatedly caught up to ideas she introduced years earlier. The real story of this era isn't whether Madonna can compete with today's artists. It's whether today's artists can still compete with an artist who is redefining the rules at 67.

“Hacks,” HBO’s hit comedy starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, ended last night, after five stellar seasons and a dozen Primetime Emmys. What began as a woke-vs.-joke rivalry between the two leading ladies progressed into an artistic soulmate bond unlike any other on TV. “ ‘Hacks’ is, most richly, a show about collaboration, about how creative friction breeds originality; in the battle between boomers and Zoomers, it points the way toward an armistice,” Michael Schulman writes.
