It is with deep sadness that Buckingham Football Club, in conjunction with the Checkley family, announces the passing of Tony Checkley.

On behalf of Christine, Chris, Matthew and Clare:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Husband, Dad and Grandad. Tony battled courageously for the past two years, facing every obstacle placed before him with strength and dignity. A true gentleman, he was loving, generous and full of humour, always able to bring a smile to those around him. He was a hands-on family man, with the greatest compassion and endless love for those closest to him. He will be missed more than words can ever say.”

Tony’s funeral service will take place at 11:00am on 8th May at Crownhill Crematorium, followed by a celebration of life at Buckingham Football Club. Family flowers only, please. Tony dedicated an extraordinary 35 years to local football and the wider community, with Buckingham Football Club at the heart of so much of that journey. He served as Chairman for 14 years, providing steady leadership, guidance, and vision through both challenging and successful times. His commitment went far beyond the title, as he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the day-to-day running of the club, always putting its future and its people first.

Before becoming Chairman, Tony was a valued general committee member, playing an active role in decision-making, club development, and ensuring everything ran smoothly both on and off the pitch. He was someone the club could always rely on—generous with his time, thoughtful in his approach, and unwavering in his support.

Tony’s passion for developing young players was clear in his time as Under 18s manager, where he mentored and guided many young players as they progressed through the club. He took great pride in helping young footballers grow not just in ability, but in confidence and character, embodying everything grassroots football stands for.

Tony also made a lasting impact at Moretonville (now Buckingham Youth FC), where he served as a coach, chairman, and trustee. Across all of his roles, he provided opportunities for countless young people to enjoy and develop through football.

More than his roles, Tony will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the genuine care he showed to everyone involved in the game. He was a cornerstone of the local community and a true ambassador for grassroots football.

At Saturday’s final home game of the season, there will be a minute’s applause before kick-off, with all gate proceeds donated to Prostate Cancer UK in honour of Tony. A book of condolence will also be available to sign in the clubhouse until after the funeral.

Everyone worried about this, rightly so, but still believe without knowing the detail, we cant be sure on how bad or good it is for us. £10 million injection from owners allowed, wage structure better than most other teams, personally think more to it. Unless we voted against.
