I live with a secret...a curse. I'm trying to protect my loved ones, including my sister Amy, from the animal inside me. πππππππ

@BrunoAHess@LordMachen Fortunately, that Hess guy is asking him something. Gift wrap. "Yeah, I mean no. Well, yes but keep it simple." Chris realizes that he has no idea yet where he'll need to take it and he doesn't want to walk around with an enormous pink bow or something like that.

Chris meanders down Main Street in Collinsport vaguely peering into shop windows. It's a little town but built for tourists. Lots of shops. He sighs. It was stupid to think that he can find a present for Carolyn here. She's been in this town practically every day of her life.

@BrunoAHess@LordMachen Like dogs about to bite you but only because they're scared and cornered." Chris suddenly notices that Bruno's returning. Had he said all that out loud? No. Of course not. Just odd thoughts running in his head. What had he and the shopkeeper actually been talking about?
4/5
@BrunoAHess@LordMachen What is he hoping for? Jealousy? It was petty and also stupid. If anyone was likely to hear the gossip that he'd been buying presents for Carolyn, it was Mrs. Stoddard instead. The last thing he wants. But too late now.

@BrunoAHess@LordMachen Like he wants to spend time explaining his love life to Bruno or the shop owner. The thought of Loomis comes to his mind. "No, I was thinking of getting it for Carolyn. Wrap it up for me, huh?" Maybe Willie will hear about it through village gossip.

@BrunoAHess@LordMachen Chris always thought Carolyn and him had that in common. That feeling of being trapped. "Would you just open the case for me?" He growls at Bruno again.
3/3
@BrunoAHess@LordMachen "It's not for me," Chris snaps at Bruno, angrily. But that doll... It looks so much like Carolyn, it's as if it had been modeled after her. He looks back at the doll and she seems to stare back at him from inside the glass case. Both safe and captive.
2/3
@BrunoAHess@LordMachen She always seems delicate and in need of care, even when she's throwing a tantrum. Then he sees one doll in particular that makes him forget about the awkwardness between him and Bruno and ask another question. "Can I see that one?" The way it looked...it was uncanny.
3/3
@BrunoAHess@LordMachen It would explain the kooky behavior. It doesn't matter. Hoping to end the conversation, his eyes search the shelves for something to pretend to be fascinated with. Books, no. Tea sets, maybe. Dolls. Now that did seem like Carolyn in a way.

@LordMachen@BrunoAHess Chris remembers him always being a little high strung when they were children and he looks like he wants to melt into the floor. "Had a rough day already?" He remembers the name at the last minute and adds it. "Bruno." Tourists could be real jackasses sometimes, he knows.
4/4
@LordMachen@BrunoAHess Chris tries to put a name to the face. Older now, of course. They both were. Then the book slams on the floor and a silence follows. The last thing he wants to do is start a conversation, but Chris feels sorry for the kid in the awkward pause.

How many days until the full moon, now? Turning a street corner he sees a shop he hasn't been in yet. Some antique store. Pausing his moping, he perks up. Maybe something here? He hears the tinkle of a bell as he walks into the shop.

Little Amy might go for all the Collins family but they make Chris feel like some dumb street urchin in a Dickens novel. How did he ever end up dating a Collins? And then having a kid with one? Or will have soon. Jesus, a Collins kid! Though his family contribution...
