Sonic Youth is the kind of band that's easy to hate in a reactionary way if you know little about them (quintessential NYC, arty, "cool," etc.) but then you dig into the catalog and it's like "no this really is one of the greatest American bands."

What I think many people would find more shocking is that this feeling of alienation, or I think better, rejection from/of society/conditions is not new at all. Like at all.

The shock when you first read "Bartleby, the Scrivener" may be in the recognition that Melville had this pre-vision of modern alienation back in 1853. You can't grasp how this specifically modern man was formed in that mid-nineteenth-century setting. (1972)
