Couldn't agree more with infectious disease specialist @drgregpoland of #mayoclinic regarding old-school killer #influenza vs new-school #covid19.
How many annual flu deaths could be prevented with behavioral changes like social isolation?

Isolation affects R naught, and will save lives from C-19, and accidentally, influenza, which kills 12k to 70k annually.
Although serious, CFR and hospitalization rate is exaggerated 2/2 testing bias. South Korea has our best data pool and shows 99% mild symptoms.
@ChrisMDPhD No need. We easily meet the need for the 1.4% of influenza patients that require hospitalization annually.
#COVID19 has a larger R0 and a higher mortality rate.
And the kicker? The hospitalization rate for #COVID19 is 10-15%
Comparisons to the flu are ill-informed.

Annually, there are an estimated 1 billion global cases influenza resulting in 290, 000 to 650,000 deaths. Are we prepared for seasonal social isolation?
This article from @TheAtlantic expresses my level of concern better than I ever could.
I'd rather overreact than under prepare for this thing.
Cancel everything.

@robertjdenault Correct. Influenza kills maybe 650,000 people per year, including the occasional young, healthy person. And, that's the seasonal variety for which a vaccine is released.
@hmfarth @pppforpatients UNC posted the NPP "residency" job on January 8th, which was followed up by a website and a press release. Either technical mistakes come in threes or leadership is not being forthcoming. I'm sorry. It sucks.

@jmugele If this is 3+ bedrooms/bathrooms squeezed into 1500sqft with reclaimed wood barn doors and single car garage (which fits 2 Fiats) I may have found my dream home.
