This is a recurring problem with British political journalism.
It reduces politics to a soap opera, driven by personal drama and rivalries.
It strips away the substance that matters - policies, ideas, social context.
He got fewer votes than last time, the narrative isn’t the country moving right, it’s the death of neoliberalism as a straight-faced political project. Stop telling people to vote for milquetoast Democrats. It doesn’t address real issues. Time to do real politics America.
It's worth reminding people who opposed the C19 lockdowns in the UK how much worse things would have been without them. The NHS was overwhelmed, people were dying at horrendous rates. Lockdown came too late but, even so, saved many lives. https://t.co/v3hRfoYp8s 🧵
Depressing reflection of media priorities that focus is all on frocks & football tickets, rather than on real obscenity - that Labour is accused of receiving £4m, its largest-ever donation, from a tax haven-based hedge fund with shares in oil and arms #bbclaurak@openDemocracy
We need to defend universalism.
Universal benefits like Winter Fuel Payments & demands like Free School Meals for All ensure no-one falls through the cracks.
It builds solidarity, reminding us that we all belong to the same society & deserve warmth, food security & dignity.
After WW2, UK debt was 250% of GDP.
How did Labour reduce it?
By SPENDING on homes, NHS, public services...
Economy grew, causing debt to shrink as a fraction of GDP.
Economics is counterintuitive.
@RichJStanton Definitely, was impacted by that myself. It’s a strange one for me as I am desperate to see the back of this government but also have concerns that this iteration of Labour lack the policies needed to tackle the issues we are facing.
whats really galling about Keir Starmer is he has robbed me of what should be one of the greatest joys of my life, the collapse of the conservative party
This is about to be the most forgettable election of my lifetime. A genuine feat of infintestimal ambition punctuated by increasingly desperate pandering to the right. No ideas, no vibes, just the limpest and most flaccid flag-shagging imaginable.
If the NHS provides a service but then that service then gets outsourced to a private contractor (from the NhS budget) who provide a worse service that costs more to account for shareholder profits, the real terms spend increases but the service gets worse/suffers cuts.
I do wish I understood how after the LITERAL SECOND WORLD WAR when the country was probably more broke than its ever been, a Labour government still just invented the NHS and social housing and now?
Now we are so bereft of the slightest crumb of ambition it makes you weep 🫠
