Thank you @CIFAR_News for supporting Quantum Research!
CIFAR’s program on Quantum Information Science has a unique way of supporting scientific discovery. It definitely had a big impact on my own research.

🌉 We spent two fully-packed days hearing about each other’s research and exploring connection points:
🌉 Our main focus was the applications of AI for fundamental science, especially at the three interrelated areas of:
➡ AI
➡ Quantum
➡ New Materials
And it’s a wrap!
Building a scientific bridge Part 1 ✅
🌉 Yesterday we wrapped up our “Quantum & AI” workshop at the Perimeter Institute.
🌉 Our event had a clear mission: forging new links with 3 Montreal research centres :
➡ IVADO
➡ MILA
➡ Institut Courtois
Aimed at bridging theory and experiment, the first annual Quantum Simulation Conference (#QSim) brought together physicists, engineers, chemists, material scientists, mathematicians, and computer scientists from around the world to discuss quantum systems.

A cosmologist and a quantum physicist joining forces.
Matt Johnson and I explored collaborations of the IQC-Perimeter initiative “QFun” and the UK-based QSimFM project.
We are just beginning (!) to understand the elementary processes in Nature…

I like the “Meeting Owl” 🦉 for having in-person discussions, while including people that are out-of-town.
I owl-ways prefer a hybrid meeting over an all-remote one, but nothing beats a good old whiteboard discussion. Preferably with earl grey and a cookie 🙂

Congratulations Albie! 👏
What a pleasure to see Albie defend his MSc thesis today.
As a supervisor, it was fantastic to work with a student who is as resourceful and dedicated to his projects. I am happy that Albie will keep working with us as a PhD student.

The left one is my favorite poster at Perimeter!
We don't talk much about her contributions to prove that energy conservation holds in general relativity, resolving a problem that held Einstein back from proclaiming general relativity as a new theory.

We had a productive Hamiltonian taming meeting this afternoon.
My conjecture:
You are at least 20% more effective in problem solving if you wear quantum socks 🧦 .

Great lunch meeting with Aggie Branczyk 🦋 at Perimeter Institute today.
I loved the ideas and perspectives! I left the table with many new ideas (and possible plans for the near quantum future 🙂 ).

Animated Math!
I love 3Blue1Brown 😊
I think it’s a fantastic resource, especially for those who are teaching.

Interesting interview with Geoffrey Hinton ("Godfather of AI”):

[38min 30s]: “Money for curiosity-driven research” and CIFAR's support was crucial for his work.
➡️Yesterday’s fundamental research became today’s technology!

Quantum For Environment Design Challenge Launch Event: https://t.co/0sRmRBQJJp
➡️This topic involves a number of ideas, including for example quantum sensors for environmental monitoring.
📖I started reading this book: “The Carbon Almanac: It's Not Too Late"

Machine Learning for Quantum Many Body Physics I enjoy this conference!! Very interesting talks and yet, the best insight happened over lunch. Nice to have 1.5h lunch breaks.

Today, our summer student Victor presented his work on the Perimeter Conference for Machine Learning
We found that Victor’s scheme on using neural networks for reconstructing quantum states is very good at learning the relative phases.

I’m in Vancouver for a CIFAR event on Monday.
I am extremely grateful to CIFAR for their support through the Global Scholars Program. My research would not be where it is today without it.

BBQ at IQC!
Events like this are so important for community building…

More pictures of the inaugural talk of our
“Re-thinking Neural Networks” seminar series 🧠
This was a joined meeting with the “Physics of Information Lab”. The discussion got so lively that we barely managed to finish the seminar within 2 hours.

It feels good to start a new seminar series!
Thanks a lot to pour first speaker: Sebastian Wetzel,
