2 Corinthians Verse 21 explains how this reconciliation is possible. It is the theological foundation of the gospel appeal: God dealt with the problem of sin through a profound exchange involving His sinless Son. The verse teaches the heart of substitutionary atonement and the great exchange.

Jesus “knew no sin” - He was completely sinless in nature and action and God “made him to be sin for us” (or “on our behalf”). This does not mean Jesus became a sinner or committed sin. Rather, God treated Him as if He were sin itself - identifying Him fully with our sin, imputing our guilt to Him, and having Him bear the penalty and condemnation that sin deserves.

The purpose: “so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Believers receive Christ’s perfect righteousness credited (imputed) to them. We are not made righteous by our own efforts but are declared and treated as righteous in God’s sight through union with Christ.

This is a divine exchange: our sin placed on the sinless Christ; His righteousness given to us.

Jesus took the punishment that you deserved, by willingly laying down His life for you.

God made the sinless One to be sin for us - He stood in our place, bore the full weight of the judgment our sins required, and willingly went to the cross.

Jesus paid a debt He did not owe, because you and I owe a debt we could never pay.

He owed nothing; He knew no sin. We owed a debt of perfect obedience and payment for our rebellion that we could never settle. On the cross He paid it in full so that, in Him, we might become the righteousness of God - fully reconciled, forgiven, and made right with God by grace through faith.

2 Corinthians 5:21 is one of the clearest, most concentrated statements of the gospel in the New Testament: the sinless Christ became sin for us so that we, in Him, might become the righteousness of God.

Your standing before God is therefore not based on your performance but on Christ’s finished work. Let this produce assurance, freedom from condemnation, and deep gratitude rather than anxiety or self-effort.

Trust the exchange, live from the new identity it gives, worship the One who accomplished it, and pass the message on!
