In August 2018, Elon Musk tweeted that he might take Tesla private at $420 a share, with funding secured. The SEC fined him $20,000,000 personally and fined Tesla another $20,000,000, and he had to step down as chairman for three years.
In the video below, he explains where the number comes from. It starts with a teenager in South Africa going through an existential crisis.
He read every religious text he could find, and none convinced him. Then he moved on to Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, which he says is a bad idea for a depressed kid.
What helped was The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a book Douglas Adams first published in 1979. In it, a supercomputer spends 7,500,000 years on the meaning of life and comes back with 42. Ten times 42 is 420.
Musk calls it a philosophy book dressed up as comedy. Nobody knows the right question to ask, and in the book Earth itself is an even bigger computer built to find it.
So he treats the universe as the answer. To find the question, he says, humans have to expand consciousness, become a multi-planet species and keep asking.
When SpaceX sent his own cherry-red Tesla Roadster into space in 2018, with a dummy in a spacesuit at the wheel, the dashboard screen said DON’T PANIC, and a copy of the book rode in the glovebox.
In 2022, he bought Twitter for $54.20 a share.
Was the $40,000,000 joke worth it?
@jimcramer The analysts are literally so lost.. They can't for the life of them think like engineers.. I saw the most on @CNBC this morning, and was the least bit surprised after hearing last week's news, if not, expected.
To be clear, I do think global warming is real and we should be concerned about the accelerating CO2 ppm growth, however the progress of sustainable energy production and consumption is tracking to solve global warming in time if we are not complacent.
The point I was making is that, even if CO2 did not cause global warming, it is uncomfortable to breathe air with >1000 ppm of CO2. Given that the outdoor ppm away from cities is now ~420 (lol), it is already getting close to 1000 ppm indoors in cities at times. You can buy a cheap CO2 monitor and measure this for yourself.
As the global base level of CO2 keeps increasing, it will cause air quality in cities to feel stuffy and unpleasant, resulting in drowsiness, poor concentration and eventually headaches and nausea. That would not be a good future.
Franklin Templeton manages $1.8 trillion in assets today.
In 1955, when CEO Jenny Johnson's father took over the family business, it had just $2.5 million in AUM & $10,000 in revenue.
It took nearly 30 years to reach their first $1 billion in assets.
"We eked out a $5,000 profit for the entire year in 1973 or 1974."
This is f*cking insane. SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk:
"Maybe even by the end of this year, you don't even bother doing coding. The AI just creates the binary directly
It should be possible to completely emulate any company where the output is digital"
In this 43-minute talk, he shows his whole company what happens to engineers and to every business that lives on a screen
Code → AI Code → No Code → Whole Companies Run By AI
His coding team says the current Grok Code is already training the next one
If your job happens on a screen, watch this before the end of the year
Worth more than any $3,000 AI course
Bookmark and watch it tonight
Then read how to put agents to work before that happens in the harness engineering guide below ↓
Human language is just a terrible, low-bandwidth compression algorithm for your brain, and Elon Musk is trying to upgrade our physical throughput.
Elon Musk’s perspective at the Neuralink presentation hits at a profound limitation of human evolution: the bottleneck of speech and typing.
Think about what actually happens when you speak: your brain generates a rich, multi-dimensional mental video—complete with emotions, visual spatial data, and complex ideas. But to share it, you have to run that data through a insanely lossy compression algorithm—speech or typing—reducing gigabytes of brain data down to a pitiful 10 to 20 bits per second. You're essentially trying to stream a 4K movie over a 1990s dial-up modem.
Neuralink’s long-term goal isn't just helping paralyzed patients control a cursor—it’s bypassing vocal cords and thumbs entirely. By reading raw motor and conceptual cortex signals directly, two humans equipped with neural implants could transfer uncompressed, high-fidelity mental concepts instantly. It would fundamentally re-define human empathy, collaboration, and what it even means to communicate.
If you want to do things like me you have to learn how to be good at technology, study engineering, physics that kind of thing, understand how the World works and try to be as accurate as possible, try to be creative, you have to think until your head hurts."
-Elon Musk
Very well said. The universe is the answer... not the question. Again.. the universe is the answer at which point we can formulate a question.. We are at current stages, pretty far away.
Elon Musk explains why he is still working even though he’s worth $1 trillion dollars.
Alexander the Great had it right: Work is noble, and true leaders never outgrow the grind. Even kings have to roll up their sleeves and put in the work. 💼🚀
