"Have you ever been arrested abroad"? That was the topic on last night's @TalkTV show, and I was pleased to take part in a conversation with @PetrieHosken.
We talked about the rapid rise in the number of British people being arrested around the world for drugs-smuggling. 1/3
It was a good opportunity to talk in a bit more depth about the trends we're seeing at @PrisonersAbroad, the impact of poor prison conditions on people's health and welfare and the importance of getting consular assistance from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. 2/3
We are seeing a rapid rise in drugs-related arrests, up 57% on last year, with notable increase amongst women and young people aged 34 and under.
In the last 6 weeks alone, we have seen 35 drugs arrests – 45% of all new cases.

Here's a thread with some of the key highlights...

Brilliant piece in the @guardian today by @jennykleeman on the British tourist Rebecca Burke who was detained in America for 19 days. Horrific ordeal, terrible conditions.
Was it a coincidence she was released so quickly after her case got in the media? https://t.co/ebqo4GSOUb
Demand for support from our medical fund is rapidly increasing. This financial year, we have provided 66 medical grants at a total cost of £9,224. (1/2)
There is a mounting and concerning increase in the number of British people being arrested for drugs-related offences overseas, particularly in countries where penalties can be very harsh, and travellers may not be fully aware of the risks.

Fantastic to welcome @SarahPriceUK and Sarah Taylor from the @FCDOGovUK to our office yesterday to talk with Chief Executive @ChrisStacey and meet the wider team, including our Prisoner and Family caseworkers whose work is particularly closely intertwined with consular services.
