My new book, co-edited with George Vrtis, features the work of nineteen fabulous authors about the environmental history of the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota. It's now available from the University of Pittsburgh Press: https://t.co/LgjTS2w6iX
It works like magic. It takes the pressure off the first draft, gives them a powerful incentive to revise, and I get to read better papers. (It also cuts way down on late papers.) In the five years or so that I’ve been doing this, between 1/3 and 1/2 of the students opt in.
In my 19-year career as a professor, I have introduced exactly one pedagogical innovation that I did not borrow or adapt from someone else:
Automatic, penalty-free, 72-hour extensions. #twitterstorians
The fine print:
If (and only if) a student turns in a complete draft by the due date, they may request—and I promise to always grant, no justification required—a penalty-free extension of 72 hours to work on it further.
Today is the official release date for my new book "Natural Allies: Environment, Energy, and the History of US-Canada Relations". It reinterprets the history of Canada-US relations through the lens of environmental and energy diplomacy. #envhist#energyhist
@tammyingram YES. I couldn’t even wrap my head around it until I read Cathy Kramer, The Politics of Resentment (though it’s more about public school than higher ed). But now I’m convinced this is it, 100%
@goueeik@UnlawfulEntries @kgmkenny Apples and oranges. No offense, but the pace of STEM work is fundamentally different from the years and years and years that go into researching and writing a single book. The whole point of this thread is that it isn't about competing or getting scooped.
