I feel like sugar be taxed like tobacco and alcohol
We tax cigarettes and alcohol partly because of their public health costs. Excess added sugar, especially from sugary drinks, is linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, dental disease, and heart disease risk.
Over 100 countries already tax sugary drinks. In places like Mexico and the UK, sales dropped and companies reformulated products. Even the WHO backs these taxes as a cost-effective tool.
But the concerns are real: taxes can hit lower-income households harder, people may swap to other foods, and personal choice matters.
So I'm wondering if the price of high-sugar products reflects more of their long-term health cost 🤔
