Classy.
From Gorton and Denton: see you later, Matt Goodwin. All that's happened here is that you stood for election, and more voters liked what other parties had to offer. You bussed in from your GB News show and tried your schtick and most of us here didn't like it. Bye!
Matt Goodwin has had his say on the result, effectively conceding victory to the Greens. But he says the loss is down to “a coalition of woke progressives and islamists”
@NewLeftEViews@adam_tooze "Realistic idealism" is the only sane position for almost anyone imo.
The problem with vulgar realism is philosophically classic: it disrespects Hume's law, trying to derive "oughts" from "is's", prescriptions from descriptions.
(Or perhaps even pretending it has no "oughts".)
Four trivially obvious sentences, followed by a fifth that is a total non-sequitur leap, smuggling the assumption that "meaning" could only ever be externally conferred, rather than intersubjectively constructed.
Can't stand this kind of scientistic bullshit (and I love science)
“As far as we can tell from a purely scientific viewpoint, human life has absolutely no meaning. Humans are the outcome of blind evolutionary processes that operate without goal or purpose. Our actions are not part of some divine cosmic plan, and if planet earth were to blow up tomorrow morning, the universe would probably keep going about its business as usual. As far as we can tell at this point, human subjectivity would not be missed. Hence any meaning that people inscribe to their lives is just a delusion.”

@rnishimura Probability is epistemic not ontological.
Without wanting to sound like a smartass, this has always seemed completely obvious to me and I find it weird when people talk as if events *really have* probabilities, rather than just happening/not happening due to causes.
The ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant must make the Government finally end the indefensible sale of arms to Israel.

@Leigh_Phillips #2 seems most likely candidate, but from reading the blurb and opening of the book I can't really tell for sure. (Obviously there is an issue of style here; I'm a dullard who likes plainspoken clarity...)
@Leigh_Phillips 3. "The very acts of classifying, surveying, etc. are, therefore, inherently tainted with racism and injustice *for anybody anywhere*, including us now" - would be a highly questionable normative claim; seems like a "cooties" argument. But doubtful Yusoff is saying this?...

A tax break for fee-charging schools is a vindictive piece of class warfare that hurts that large majority of parents and kids who can't afford high fees, by subsidising private schools and passing costs on to the public in the form of foregone state revenue.
