When someone opens up about something difficult, we don’t need to rush to fix it or jump in with an answer.

We acknowledge it. We sit with it. We listen.

And in the right moment, we can share that we’ve struggled too and have found hope in Jesus.

Time and again in the gospel of Mark we see Jesus’ compassionate nature. 

He didn’t withdraw from people experiencing pain and suffering, but met them where they were.

Neither do we need to withdraw from pain and suffering, but rather point people to Jesus.

Mark’s gospel shares stories of pain and struggles, so it’s normal when reading and discussing it that we would resonate with those stories.

If this happens to someone in your group, pause, offer to pray for them, let them know you care - and point to Jesus who offers hope.

When helping someone learn about Christianity, we need to be truthful and acknowledge life's pain and suffering.

But we don’t stop there, because the gospel doesn’t stop there.

It leads us to Jesus - He offers us hope in our suffering, through it, and beyond it 🧡

When people raise difficult questions or share about pain and struggles, we want to be honest and acknowledge it - not offer easy answers or pretend everything is fine.

But we shouldn’t stop there, because the gospel doesn’t stop there. 

We point to Jesus, who offers us hope 🧡

When someone shares their pain with us, we point them to Jesus. 

When Martha was grieving over the death of her brother, Lazarus, Jesus pointed her to himself - “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25, NIV)

We remember the comforts of Jesus, and we point people to him.

What do we do when someone shares their pain with the group? We do what Jesus did.

In John 11, when Jesus saw Mary grieving over the death of Lazarus, he wept - sharing her pain.

So we do the same. When someone opens up about their pain, we pause. We pray. We show we care.

You don’t need to explain everything perfectly, include a clever take, or have all the answers.
