I updated my master spreadsheet, so now it shows 2022 which was a meh year, but really all the years here are fine except for 2020, 2020 can die in a covid fire :)
It's not 2020 anymore, so I also have action up for Sunday. Feel free to buy some. Or don't, I'm not your boss. <3
@JustinWithAJay @DEONBROCK@brianchastings@ACR_POKER Vaggitarian here, was chip leading that PKO FT... PKO ICM is always messy, but whatever, at least we all made a bit. GGs
As a fellow elder, one with 4 kids, I can say with reasonable confidence that children take a bigger mental toll on your will to do <anything> related to poker than age does.
I'm impressed with your grindset Bryan (and in awe of Aaron's), but I do think kids make it a whole new ballgame. (IIRC you have at least two kids as well, so you know what's up).
If you need a non fiction book, I always recommend
@sportswithjohn
's "The Anthropocene Reviewed". It's a book of essays, so you can put it down after an essay and you won't need to remember where you're at. it's
also written in a very profound way that frequently makes me emotional during rereads. I give it 5 stars. Good luck on the journey!
@ComeOnJuice@PhilGalfond I've never made one, but I feel like they'd be easier than MTT sheets. Just need to sort by site & stakes, add "time played" as an option... feels like it would be fairly easy.
I'd be down to try it, I think
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so I’m going to take a shot.
Hey @PhilGalfond, big fan of yours. With your “Beyond the Game” promo starting, you’re probably going to receive a lot of playing data between now and the end of 2025, from potentially dozens to hundreds of players being coached and mentored by you. I was wondering if perhaps you needed a place to put that data…
My name is Chris, and I’ve been a low stakes professional poker player for 15+ years, but I have recently developed an aptitude for collecting and reading through data. Specifically, I have tracked every single MTT I have played since September 2017, and I have a spreadsheet devoted to each year, as well as a master spreadsheet. I input data (tournament buyin, date, cash, etc.) and have gotten fairly good at automating and sorting through large datasets (my master sheet has over 50,000 games). In addition to locating unusual trends in my game (I’m a losing player on Wednesdays, so I often choose to take the day off), I’m able to sort by buyin level, field size, KO vs non-KO, day of week, FT position, site, and more, and I can get all these outputs while still only inputting day/buyin/field size/cash/FT position (if FT).
Your goal with your BTG promotion is to have your students profit $100M in the next 17 months, and, assuming they are forthcoming with their profit numbers, you may receive a huge amount of data from these players. I would like to offer my services to you to create custom spreadsheets for your students, as well as a master spreadsheet for yourself, so you have a place to hold and showcase this data. We can work to get as many data outputs as possible with a minimal amount of input required from the players, and the data can be used to see things like which sites yield higher ROIs or have the softest cash games, which day of week seems the most profitable, whether lower field or higher field MTTs have a better yield, etc.
I’ve also done some spreadsheet work for friends in the past, such as Patrick Tardif (better known as Egption), customizing spreadsheets and being his go-to technical support for him and his students. I have been lucky enough to have had great relationships with streamers such as Kevin Martin, Parker “tonkaaaap” Talbot, and Aaron “abarone68” Barone, though I haven’t had the chance to do any work (beyond moderating twitch streams) for them.
Included are some pictures of my data, with some information held back (which you can see if you decide to reach out, of course), so you can get a good look at the work I do. I would love to have a small part in something so ambitious and have been a big fan of yours since I started playing poker in 2006 (being on the rail for the old FTP cash games was… something else!)
Not including my email but my DMs are open if you want to talk.
Thanks,
Chris
In theory I could probably isolate all the hands I play on Wednesdays via HoldemManager or PokerTracker, but I won't have a lot of those hands from 2017-2022 in my databases anymore, so it's not really feasible for me to do that.
On a more general note, what my tracking has shown me (among other things) is that I have more consistent results in PKOs, on days when I can start early (not late reg so much), and on days where I have done some (but not a ton) of physical activity, like a walk or a round of golf. I do better when the kids are either not home or preoccupied (or sleeping, hence the off-peak schedule) and I do better after I've spent time with my family and/or cleaning my office (being in a more balanced, mentally healthy state). And I do better when I take my ADHD medication.
I've learned to listen to my body and my mind, and make decisions that "four-hours-from-now-Chris" would support. Sometimes I still do play Wednesdays, if I feel really good or my son's scouts is cancelled or etc., but (this year especially) I'm really trying to put other things, more important things for long-term-Chris, ahead of poker.
$-wise, this is my 2nd worst year since 2014. But, I'm happy and I'm healthy(ish) and I'm privileged to be in a position where I temporarily don't need to make money from poker (other income streams). So if I have to run bad, I'm doing it at the best time LOL
I'm married with four children, and Wednesdays have historically been very busy for us (youngest has dance, sometimes twice, oldest has her youth group, my son has scouts that meet Wed night, etc.) ...
I'm an off-peak grinder, so my theory on Wednesdays is this: when I start a session at 8 or 9pm, I'm often awake until 2-3am if I am going deep in MTTs, and those last couple hours are often my highest equity hours. If I have a full day of driving the kids around, scrambling to make dinner, getting some housework during the day done, picking them up from school (the list is literally endless lol), by the time I get to midnight or 1am I am exhausted, and am not very likely to be playing my best poker when my highest equity spots arise.
Thus the pattern of being a losing player on Wednesdays, which is backed up by my 50k+ MTT sample. So I take the day off, usually do some study in the morning, do the weekly chores that take some time, and then after the kids are in bed I relax and game or I go play board games w/ friends... anything to not play poker for a day!
Depends, if it's just a version of my spreadsheet (or a tuned down version that has fewer bells and whistles), then it's not very much work for me and so it's pretty cheap (maybe $20, depending on how much you want to alter the sheet i am using)
If it's building a sheet from scratch, or making major changes to my sheet where i'll have to play with the formulas and stuff to get it to work, then it's an hourly rate that we discuss and agree on ahead of time (I might have to go check out what artists etc charge for hourly rates and be in that ballpark)
@ALLinPav@abarone68 Fatherhood really is just another "what have you done for me lately"
First my real kids go to camp, now my online kid has a shiny new dad
Tough world out here
