Today’s lab reminded me why networking fundamentals matters a lot for cloud engineering.

I encountered a Cisco router stuck in ROMMON, unable to boot its IOS image. Fixing it required understanding boot order, persistence, and recovery.

What stood out was the close correlation to cloud infrastructure:

• ROMMON → VM bootloader
• boot system → kernel / AMI pointer
• write memory → persist configuration
• reload → VM reboot

This is exactly a real infrastructure recovery scenario, the same thought process used when cloud VMs fail to boot.

Labs like this are a good reminder that the cloud is still just systems underneath and understanding those systems makes everything click.
