Bill C-9 Turns Ideological Criticism into a Crime:

This proposed bill in the House of Commons 2nd Reading Committee, represents a major muzzling of Free Speech affecting legislators at all levels, reporters and the public. Similar legislation in the UK is resulting in 12,000 arrests per year, and currently over 4,000 people in jail. At a time when Ontario courts are overwhelmed and failing to prosecute violent criminals these new measures will only amplify the number of violent criminals left on the street, and bring the justice system into disrepute.

“The words in this provision are ‘to provoke a state of fear”. Now you and I are thinking of those words in the traditional way, that is, we’re assuming… that it means provoking a state of fear about the possibility of violence. That’s a threat, that’s an assault. That’s not what they’re getting at… If you have a group of people that are advocating for an ideology that is contrary to yours, and stands against everything you believe in, then now we are in to provoking a different kind of fear, and that’s the kind of fear I think they’re talking about. This is a type of fear that until recently has been unknown to the law.”
