Tensions between Ismaili Community in Salamiyah, Syria and Beduin neighbors.
As is so often the case, questions of honor and women spark communal clashes that have many origins.
#CentralSyria | E. #Hama: Angry Protest of the Ismaili Community in the City of #Salamiyah in Rural Hama
A protest and gathering of men and young men took place in the Ismaili-majority city of Salamiyah, east of Hama, this evening, July 4, 2026, after General Security Service militias arrested dozens of Ismaili young men from the city. The arrests came after these young men had objected to Bedouin youths arriving from outside the city harassing girls from Salamiyah and filming them.
When the HTS-led General Security militias intervened, they arrested dozens of young men from the Ismaili community, while providing protection to the Bedouins. A protest subsequently broke out demanding the release of the detainees and the achievement of justice and equality through the impartial enforcement of the law, without sectarian or religious discrimination. Local efforts by Ismaili community notables are underway to calm the situation.

#Syria: A newly leaked document addressed to the General Authority for Supply and Procurement has revealed a request to purchase vehicles for the Ministry of Religious Endowments (Awqaf) in the #STG specifically for Damascus Countryside Governorate alone, valued at $1,850,500. The document is dated February 16, 2026.
Local sources report that following the document’s circulation, the Ministry of Awqaf opened an investigation to identify whoever was responsible for the leak.
This level of spending is considered extremely excessive given Syria’s dire economic conditions.
Notably, the Minister of Awqaf had previously appeared in a motorcade of luxury vehicles in the city of #Homs approximately two months ago.
The minister in question, Muhammad Shukri, has also appointed a number of his relatives to government positions, including his sister to an administrative post within the ministry itself, and his son as charge d’affaires at the Syrian Embassy in #Berlin.
Note: I would like to point out that campaigns targeting corruption specifically involving this minister have been recurring, even though corruption is widespread, with multiple ministers, governors, and officials appearing in convoys of luxury vehicles. However, I believe the campaigns singling out this particular minister are deliberate, likely orchestrated by someone, given that he is one of the few new officials who did not previously belong to the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham #HTS terrorist organization.
#Homs | Palmyra: the education authorities decided to change the names of a number of local schools.
Most notable name change is Khaled Al-Asaad, the famous archaeologist who was executed by ISIS for trying to protect Palmyra's ruins and heritage.
So in essence, the new regime deems an enemy of ISIS, an of theirs and has decided to expunge them from public memory.
