@the_lineca@kshahrooz "eliminating systemic racism and religious discrimination including Islamophobia". How is that confusing? Islamophobia is not even the "key term" you stated. It is "systemic racism and religious discrimination". Says so right in the name of the motion...
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau To me this would only be okay if there was a big benefit to society in giving this increased access as a counterpoint to this very real cost. You've only presented "people should mind their own business" as benefit. That doesn't work for me 3/3
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau Just waiting for bad actors to act out and dealing with the fallout means people will have died already and the lethality of what they had access to will play into that . So you have to be okay knowing more people will die due to access to higher firepower. 2/
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau In the same way gov sets safety standards for weapons. Large magazines fail. Assault, military style fail. What meets safety standards gets to be used with appropriate training. Just like vehicles. I think we are in agreement here.
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau Guns are just being regulated as with any other manufactured good in society. People can be trusted with guns and their use is regulated but that does not imply anything goes. Just like with vehicles we need to set standards both for users and manufacturers
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau We regulate production and access to all sorts of things. It's a balancing act that society plays between individual choice and collective need and safety. I don't understand why guns should be given an exemption to this basic principle.
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau A vehicle with no seatbelt is banned from roads or example. It's not "you just need more training and to promise to take care". Its public safety vs private benefit. No headlights ? Banned. No breaklights? Same. Which is why Ford would never make such a vehicle for the public.
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau We are in agreement. As with military vehicles if you enlist and get training you can wield other weapons not meant for civilian use.
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau They work in conjunction with placing limits on what a road worthy vehicle is. When was the last time you saw a tank driving down the highway?
@jacirez @CooperFelker@JustinTrudeau Vehicles have a ton of restrictions to be considered safe and street legal. I agree with you we should do the same for guns.
@OttawaCitizen@IvisonJ One bank in England that hasn't decided to dump tar sands investing yet does not make for a justification for gov intervention in this terminal patient. The gov should invest in the transition you agree it needs. Let the market decide how much to invest in the current industry.
@CBCLarsen just read https://t.co/O217SdxLTY why did family not leave earlier? CDN gov told all to return ASAP on march 14, their scheduled return was March 20 in article, and Indian lockdown started March 24. Why are they even still in India?
@RmdKenny Seeing the previous article got me thinking that we should demand future centers/stadiums etc have emergency conversion plans into makeshift shelters/hospitals/etc built into their approval process. Something to keep in mind when the immediate crisis goes away!
@RmdKenny I agree wholeheatedly that we need better preparation at the federal level to such events in the future ! It's alway difficult to give rare but tragic potential events their due attention.
@KerryLynneFindl From the article: "This figure is not presented as a counter-argument to those who blame the fires on climate change". Is the Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change worried about arson in Australia maybe?
