According to reports by Axios and Amwaj, US President Donald Trump has held phone calls with Kurdish leaders in Iraq as Israel presses Washington to consider mobilizing Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the expanding US-Israeli war against Iran.

Axios reported that Trump spoke with Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani shortly after the bombing campaign began, in calls described as “sensitive.” The outreach reportedly follows months of lobbying by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who believes Kurdish forces could “rise up” and play a decisive role if space is created on the ground.

Amwaj reports that Israeli and US airstrikes have heavily targeted security infrastructure across Kurdish-majority provinces in western Iran, hitting IRGC, Basij, intelligence facilities, border posts and radar sites in at least 17 cities.

The strikes have fueled speculation that Washington and Tel Aviv are attempting to weaken Iranian state control in these areas to create operational room for exiled Kurdish armed groups based in Iraq.
