The familiar seasonal contest between the Oak King and the Holly King may find one of its earliest echoes in the 14th century Arthurian tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 🌳🍒

As King Arthur’s court gathered at the turning of the year, a towering Green Knight entered Camelot, crowned in leaves and carrying an axe along with a sprig of holly...symbolising evergreen life shining in the dark and cold of winter 🌙 ❄️

He offered a ritual challenge...he would suffer one blow now, but this must be returned in a year and a day...a reminder that sovereignty just like the seasons, is never permanent ⚔️

When Gawain struck off his head, the Green Knight rose again and, carrying his head, departed, promising his return. Death, just like the Summer or Winter, had not triumphed, only temporarily yielded 💀⏳
