And this also made me understand one of Nanjo’s lines a little better — the part where he says that Mokyeon supposedly wanted to “drag him through the mud.” If we look at everything strictly from Nanjo’s point of view and don’t take into account everything that happened to Mokyeon because of Nanjo himself, his reaction actually makes sense. 🥲
After Mokyeon woke up in Chapter 33 and everything that happened afterward, Nanjo could have seen the situation as Mokyeon deliberately using their relationship to humiliate him in front of Sunhwa. Especially if Nanjo had been convinced that Mokyeon hated him and was simply trying to get revenge for being called a rapist and not being believed when he said that wasn’t what happened. 😭
“It’s only natural that you hated me. So you probably wanted to drag me through the mud at any cost.” 🥀
Now imagine that after all of this, Mokyeon suddenly says, “I really love you.” Nanjo could very well have simply not believed that he was being sincere. And considering his position and past experiences, he could naturally have some prejudice toward people who show an interest in him. He’s used to people wanting his money, connections, status, or some other kind of benefit. So why would he immediately believe Mokyeon, especially after everything that happened between them? 🤔💭
And then even that final line becomes interesting: “Let’s never meet again.” If we don’t look at it simply as a cold decision, but as the reaction of someone who has just heard a confession while still not knowing whether he can trust the person saying it, it sounds completely different. Maybe it isn’t only an attempt to put an end to everything, but also a reaction to feeling deceived and not knowing how sincere Mokyeon actually is. 🥹 Like: “You’ve been playing with me and my feelings all this time, and now you’re telling me you love me — and I’m just supposed to believe you?” 😭
At the same time, I’m not saying that this is definitely what happened. This is just me trying to compare the AU with what we’ve already seen in the main story. Because the most interesting part for me is still something else: in the author’s note, we’re directly told that, considering the characters’ personalities, situations like these realistically probably wouldn’t happen. And then I’m not entirely sure whether they mean that the characters wouldn’t say these exact things at that particular point in Season 1, or whether it means that this kind of scenario simply wouldn’t be possible for them in general. 🤔
Because if we look at the main story, we still ended up getting very similar events. Sunhwa left. Nanjo cut ties with him. Mokyeon revealed the truth and confessed his feelings. Nanjo was once again faced with the question of trust. And in the end, we got that exact same “Let’s never meet again.” 👀🥲
So I still can’t decide what exactly is going on here. Maybe we really are seeing the consequences of what happened between the characters, just after a different amount of time has passed. Or maybe we’re looking at these scenes from completely the wrong angle, and later the story will explain why the author deliberately created this parallel between the AU and canon. 👀✨
Anyway, I’ll just leave this here for everyone to think about 🤗🥰

I feel like, if we really think about this What If AU, there’s one pretty interesting point here. I specifically compared the AU from the first half of the season and the AU from the second half with what eventually happened in the actual story — and the more I think about it, the more I feel like there’s some kind of strange parallel between them. 🤔👀
Just to clarify: I’ll attach the screenshots in English because I think it’ll be easier for most people to understand the context that way, but from here on I’ll be referring specifically to the Korean version, because some of the wording is slightly different. 🥹
In the AU from the first half of the season, the situation is basically this: Sunhwa takes the hint and steps aside, while Nanjo cuts ties with him. And if we look at what’s happening in the main story right now, we basically get a very similar result: Sunhwa doesn’t want anything to do with Nanjo anymore, and Nanjo really does cut off contact with Mokyeon. So in the end, some of the key things from the “What If” still happened in canon in one form or another. 👀
And this is where I start wondering: if Nanjo already says basically the same things to Mokyeon in the AU that happen later in the actual story, then what’s really the difference? Especially considering that many people believe Nanjo’s feelings started developing sometime after Chapter 16. After that, he seems noticeably softer and more lenient toward Mokyeon to me. So it’s difficult for me to see his actions as simply following the terms of the deal — maybe he himself still didn’t fully understand what he felt for him. 🤔
It gets even more interesting when we compare the AU from the second half of the season with what happens after Chapter 33. In the AU, Mokyeon confesses his feelings to Nanjo, reveals the truth about Sunhwa, and Nanjo immediately focuses on the question of trust: “How am I supposed to trust Mr. Hwang Mokyeon?” And then comes the thought that Mokyeon had been lying to him all this time. 😭
And this really reminds me of what we’re seeing in the current season. Because essentially, almost the same thing happens: Mokyeon confesses → Nanjo can’t immediately believe him → he remembers the lies and the deal → distrust appears between them again → and eventually they separate. 😵💫
So I really can’t shake the feeling: why does the What If look so similar to what eventually happened in canon? 👀🤗
