Hamas continues to ruthlessly and callously oversee the mass destruction of Gaza and annihilation of its people because it refuses to pursue an expedient end to the war without a deal with Israel that restores things to how they used to be on October 6th: no direct military occupation & full reconstruction of the territory. So why drag 2.3 million along a futile suicidal adventure on behalf of Iran for nine months if all you want is what you already had?

This disastrous M.O. has been so characteristic of the Palestinian leadership for decades: irresponsible and ineffective priorities, strategies, and actions in pursuit of fantasies and unattainable or ill-defined ends and goals, only to want what was already in hand after failure and facing disastrous consequences. It's time to learn from our past mistakes, take responsibility, and hold ourselves and our leaders accountable for the repeated and ongoing deadly mistakes that have set back the Palestinian people's just and urgent aspirations time and again. Change, liberation, and self-determination must begin from within, starting with moral and decent leaders who don't think of dead Palestinians as "necessary sacrifices" to delegitimize Israel and gain international sympathy.

What's so exceptionally detrimental about so many of the Palestinian people's "allies" is that they did not give a hand up to the community in pursuit of sound and strategic goals and strategies, instead reinforcing the perpetual victimhood narrative that denies the Palestinians any agency, control or responsibility over their choices and actions. The Palestinians have essentially been led to believe that an occupied people can do no wrong because they faced/are facing inequalities and violence, and therefore, their mistakes are viewed as inevitable consequences of injustice, rather than avoidable outcomes of horrible decisions and choices. Those who cheer on Hamas, the armed resistance narrative, and fuel the flames of inciteful/hateful rhetoric are worsening this tendency, instead of offering the Palestinian people a helping hand in pursuing, formulating and nurturing/choosing better decisions, helpful leadership, and a practical national project for liberation.
