Have you tried understanding the significance of your obstetric scan?
The prenatal scan is commonly understood as the scan you do during pregnancy. It is totally a noninvasive and harmless examination. While some women already understood the importance of this examination to their well-being and that of their developing child/children, most people still feel reluctant to observing that and always wait until when a problem arises.

This approach is dangerous and has caused a lot of recorded damages during pregnancy. Most women believe that as much as they haven't seen/feel any challenge in their pregnancy, there's no need for obstetric scan.

Your routine obstetric ultrasound scan helps you and your condition in ways you can't imagine.
Some of the reasons why you must undergo your routine obstetric ultrasound scan are

1: It helps monitor your fetal growth and development
2: Routine obstetric scan also helps me confirm the viability/survival of your developing baby especially at the early stage.

3: With your scan,you can obtain the accurate dating of your developing fetus. This is quite serious as many people don't know/remember the rightful time/months they took in and may be inaccurate in dating of their pregnancy.

4: Ectopic pregnancy: Some do feel they are pregnant likely because they're seeing the symptoms or not seeing their mensuration and their actual situation might be very critical more than they think. Ectopic pregnancy is an emergency situation and its earlier identification helps a long way in making the situation less dangerous...

5: Another important observation you can obtain from your routine obstetric ultrasound scan is the actual number of developing babies you're carrying. Every pregnancy comes with its own demanded energy and understanding your true situation as a pregnant woman greatly helps in preparing you for what comes ahead. Don't allow yourself to pass through challenges that can be avoidable.

6: While your ultrasound scan may not be the only test needed to identify any genetic/chromosomal abnormalities (e.g down syndrome) in your developing fetus, it greatly contributes in the overall evaluation of the case.

7: Another important and exciting reason you should do your scan is because it presents your developing baby to you at every stage of the development. You get to observe the detained parts of your baby, the head, the hands/legs, the abdomen and most other things you may want to see.

8: Another important observation in your routine ultrasound scan is observing the position of your placenta. This is a very serious observation as the placental position significantly affects the birth process that will be the best for you and your baby. Always ensure your Sonographer evaluates this!

9: Understanding the position of your baby in your pregnancy is another important observation just like in the case of a placental position. Failure to rightfully access this can be very dangerous and have significant recorded damages it has caused. Take your fetal position very seriously.

10: Fetal weight- While some may not have a problem with this, it's quite another remarkable observation in your routine Sonographic scan. Following up the fetal weight of your unborn child enhances the whole pregnancy burden and makes the delivery process easier. As an expectant lady, you're supposed to keep track of the weight of your developing child from the second trimester. This has a lot of importance to you as the mother and to your unborn child.

I will stop here at these. While you pass through that stage of your life as an expectant lady, ensure to make the journey enjoyable too!

Last year, I almost lost my wife to preeclampsia during pregnancy.

In fact, last year was the first time I ever heard the word "preeclampsia."

My wife was six months pregnant when doctors discovered that both her life and the baby's life were at risk.

What followed was one of the most difficult periods of our lives.

The hospital we were using in Gwarimpa referred us to the Federal Medical Centre in Jabi.

When we got there, they explained that they did not have enough ICU capacity for a premature baby and referred us to the National Hospital, Abuja.

I immediately drove her there.

Unfortunately, part of their ICU was under maintenance and had already been fumigated.
The remaining units were full, so they could not take us.

Again, they referred us to Garki Hospital, Abuja.

By this time, my wife's condition was getting worse.

Her eyes were swollen.
Her legs were swollen.
Her face had become so swollen that she barely looked like herself.

She was exhausted, dizzy, frightened, and in pain.

Yet I kept telling her everything would be fine, even though deep down, I was terrified.

At Garki Hospital, after reviewing the scan results and referral notes, they told us the case was too critical for them to handle.

Imagine driving from one hospital to another with a pregnant woman whose life was in danger, while every hospital kept referring you elsewhere.

The most painful part was that none of the hospitals could arranged an ambulance despite seeing her in a critical condition.

I was driving and making endless phone calls, speaking with doctors that I know, speaking with friends, and anyone who could point us in the right direction.

Finally, someone suggested the Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada.

That was our last stop and that was where we found hope.

The doctors and nurses there fought with everything they had to safe her live.
At the same time they tried to buy time and help the baby's lungs mature enough to survive after delivery or if delivered safely.

They did everything possible.
Sadly, it wasn't enough.

The injections used to accelerate the baby's lung development took a serious toll on my wife's health.

Eventually, I was asked to sign documents acknowledging any possible outcomes.
She was also prepared to go for CS.

I signed.
To this day, I can still remember that moment.

My mind was racing.
My hands were shaking.

I was preparing myself for outcomes no husband ever wants to face.

By the mercy of Allah and the dedication of the medical team she had a normal delivery and my wife's life was saved.

(But we lost our baby girl 😭 😭 😭)

There are pains that never completely leave you.
Losing a child is one of them.

Still, I remain grateful.

Grateful that my wife survived.
Grateful to the doctors and nurses at the Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada.

They are among the finest medical professionals I have ever encountered.

And grateful to Allah for carrying us through one of the darkest moments of our lives.

Two days ago 13th of June 2026, Allah bless my family with a male child….. Alhamdulillah. 😊
