Malik Heard got a big surprise when he was at his graduation at the University of West Georgia.

His mom, Sgt. Eva Roby, who was deployed in Kosovo with the National Guard, surprised him after he received his diploma.

Sgt. Roby told Fox 5 that she has had to miss some important moments over the years, but she refused to miss her son, whom she raised as a single mom, graduate from college.

Malik is the first man to graduate from college in his family, and his degree is in Special Education.

Malik says he’s not done; he’s going for his Master's and PhD next.

The Special Olympics family is saddened to hear of the passing of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. A friend of the Special Olympics movement, she served as the Honorary Chair of Special Olympics Georgia from 1971-1975. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones.
