There's a group of recordings of Black folks rapping in prison- done from the 30s thru the 60s. The album's called "Get Your Ass In The Water And Swim Like Me".

Rapping existed in the Black community long before the mythological party in the Bronx w Kool Herc in the 1970s.

Black DJs in the US, in the 50s and 60s used to basically rap (it's a misconsception that it started w jamaican "toasters", as that was their version of what black djs in the US were doing.

Sly Stone was well known in the BayArea as a rapping DJ b4 he became known as a musician.
