Tennessee lost one of the greatest Tennesseans to ever live today.

Dolly Parton was so much bigger than the music.

She helped families rebuild after wildfires and floods. She gave millions to disaster relief, hospitals, medical research and scholarships. She supported veterans and military families.

But the Imagination Library is personal for me.

I was a young Marine raising a family without much money. We signed our daughters up, and every month a book showed up at our house.

For free.

Back then, I didn’t understand the scale of what Dolly had built. I just knew those books mattered to my family.

Millions of families have their own version of that story.

When Tennessee hurt, Dolly showed up.

When Appalachia hurt, Dolly showed up.

When families needed help, Dolly showed up.

When kids needed books, Dolly showed up.

There are celebrities. There are icons.

And then there are people who leave this world better than they found it.

Dolly Parton did that.

Rest easy, Dolly.

And from one Marine family who once needed those books

In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.

She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.

The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.

She handed out the checks herself.

In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.

When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.

You've probably heard that part.

Here's the part you haven't:

The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.

Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.

She built her county an entire hospital.

She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.

In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.

Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.

In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.

And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.

She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.

She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.

“Just give them your stuff and you’ll be fine.” That’s the lie people repeat until a case like this exposes it.

A man in London was targeted over what the robbers believed was a £300,000 watch. The watch was fake. He was outnumbered. He had every incentive to hand it over and survive.

They stabbed him anyway.

That is the problem with the compliance argument. It only counts the people who handed over their property and lived to tell the story. It ignores the people who complied and still got hurt, because they are not around to explain what went wrong.

This man was not in a negotiation.

He was marked before he ever left the restaurant.

A security guard allegedly filmed him, sent the information out, and four men followed him to his car.

So where was the compliance supposed to happen?

Gun control did not stop the violence. Disarming normal people did not remove evil from the street. It just left the victim with fewer options when evil showed up.

If you choose to comply in that moment, that is your call.

But do not legislate the rest of us into your victim mentality.

Constitutional Carry is now law in 29 of the 50 states, including Texas as of 2021.

Not only has it not given rise to more gun crime, but it’s worked out just fine in states that have passed it.

Some will try to paint this as “radical” but I call it following the Constitution.
