More than competence and capacity, 21st century organisations need leaders with strong character and empathy to be able lead their people effectively and thrive in the marketplace.
Some of the leaders in various positions of authority, who are not really meeting the expectations of their followers, are not necessarily bad. The fact is that, they were never prepared or not yet prepared to face the leadership and technological challenges of 21st century.
As leaders or emerging leaders leading or aspiring to lead within the spheres of our influence, we need to master the art of leading ourselves first, before we can effectively influence and lead others. This is where personal leadership development is considered highly paramount.
As a business leader, CEO, politician, entrepreneur etc...if you have people who genuinely like you for who you are, despite your titles, influence, positions or accolades, please hold them tightly. Continually play your own part by caring and investing in them intentionally.
In the world of business and politics, there are many self acclaimed and situational leaders, who know little or nothing about leadership. To be able to lead effectively at all levels, you must be transformed and empowered with principle based, 21st century leadership skills!
The emergence of a great leader requires that he goes through the three most important phases of life sequentially...
1. Transformation
2. Empowerment
3. Manifestation
These phases take alot of discipline, patience, focus and determination. There are no shortcuts!
Leaders nuture and replicate their kinds through strategic mentorship and succession. The legacy they leave behind is based on who they are able to transform and empower during their lifetime, not in buildings and institutions bearing their names just to show undeserving honour.
Titles do not necessarily make an effective leader. The hallmark of true leadership is hinged on a compassionate heart that loves, cares and serves people selflessly.
May we not miss the seasons of our lives. Young people, let's use the time that we have now to build, prepare, plan and execute. Opportunities gravitate towards people who are prepared and elude the ones who are not. Take heed!!!!
In the 21st century marketplace and political landscape, leadership is everybody's business. More than the usual shadow boxing, we must strategically engage, leading with what we have and from where we are.
