Yesterday evening at about 6pm, an elderly woman with a cane arrived for the evening mass at Cathédrale Saint-Charles-Borromée in Saint-Étienne, France.

She was followed into the vestibule by a “man of North African appearance” who pretended to look at the notice board and then violently grabbed her, putting his hand inside her clothes for about 15 seconds before yanking her necklace from her neck and leaving her in shock and with bad bruising and a bleeding neck.

She reported the incident to the police and the incident was caught on CCTV.

Local reports say that this sort of theft is quite common but for the North African thief to do it in a church is particularly shocking.
