Looking back at the Wexford Footballers @OfficialWexGAA defeat to Dublin yesterday 🟣🟡
In this short thread I will set out how to set up a Development & Performance Plan
You can use this for any team, county, code or sport ⚽️
A thread 🧵
1/8
Tasty ones coming up ✊ 🏐
Which is people’s pick of the round?
Mine would be
- Louth v Armagh Round 2A
(will get a proper sense of where Louth are now)
- Derry v Meath Round 2B
(Could be a war of attrition up in Celtic Park)
I’m loving the new All-Ireland format
@1989_scooter Yeah although Derry at home v meath and Monaghan at home v Roscommon might be tricky for the away teams 🤷♂️
You’re right, harder to call 2A
Especially as you get a second chance if you lose
Changes the dynamic slightly
Round 2A teams:
- Win and you’re into a 1/4 final
- Lose & you’ve another bite at the cherry against Round 2B winners
All-Ireland SFC round 2A
Donegal v Cork
Galway v Westmeath
Tyrone v Mayo
Louth v Armagh
———-
Round 2B teams:
- win & you’ve a play off to reach the 1/4 Finals v losers of Round 2A
- lose & it’s time to put the feet up, follow the World Cup in North America 🌍 and binge-watch Love Island ❤️🏝️
All-Ireland SFC round 2B
Derry v Meath
Kildare v Kerry
Cavan v Dublin
Monaghan v Roscommon
@KillerMcHugh@DeelySport@markdeely@RIVERSIDEBOY79@BarryMullane1@brendand_8 Absolutely 💯
And that’s why you can’t have any hard and fast rules that work all the time
You want your team and players to be tactically flexible
And decide things on the fly (based on sound principles of defending) at all moments of the game
Think a lot of people in the comments are missing out on the point here
Obviously 16k in Croker is more than the ~7k allowed in Parnell Park
But a full (small) county ground is a WORLD AWAY from a 20% full Croker.
It’s empty, no other way of describing it
And for the good of Dublin themselves (see result!) the team and support would be much better off in their proper home ground
(Obviously it’s a side point that the capital probably should have a 25k seater for Dublin’s (and other games) use
Do you need to choose between man-marking and zonal defending? 🏐
Ciaran Deely @CiDeely explains how a hybrid defensive approach can help you nullify the opposition’s key threats while maintaining a strong, organised defensive structure across the rest of the pitch.
The best of both worlds: targeted pressure and collective control.
@DeelySport Hurling session
•Conditioned game for tackling and passing
•Contested shooting drill (points)
•Contested shooting (goals)

🏟️ Croke Park finals are massive for Christy Ring, Rackard & Meagher teams — giving players from developing counties the chance to perform on the biggest stage in hurling. A huge occasion for players, supporters & the growth of the game 👏
Coaches: a good zonal defence doesn’t have to be complicated 🏐
Ciaran Deely @CiDeely outlines a balanced zonal defensive structure and explains why it can be so effective in Gaelic football — protecting space, supporting teammates, and reducing exposure in 1v1 situations.
Simple principles. Collective movement. Better control without the ball.
