Worst case scenario for me. WotC not being in control was always a big pro for the format
For all the people who sent threats and were advocating for this, trust me, it won't get better. The people with the biggest financial stake in the format now control it.
As a result of the threats last week against RC members, it has become impossible for us to continue operating as an independent entity. Given that, we have asked WotC to assume responsibility for Commander and they will be making decisions and announcements going forward.
@DanAxelrod01@commandcast I mean this ban announcement actively hurts WOTC as it takes away several high value cards they can market and use in future sets that people will chase, but whatever man, feel whatever you want to feel
@DanAxelrod01@commandcast Yes but these aren't stocks, these are game pieces
Unrealized gains exist, but trying to judge MTG bans off of potential value leads to stuff like the Reserve List, and provides incentives for WOTC to print even stronger cards in even rarer ways.
Its worse in the long run IMO
@Mitchell_Kidd1@commandcast Oh for sure, I cant speak on stores but it definitely sucks for them- I just hope they aren't too deep into copies of those cards
@nappthea @mtgBouncerman @commandcast I feel for people who feel as if they lost money, but I am extremely wary of catering to that opinion as this same mindset led to the creation of the Reserved List when reprints lowered prices of the Power Nine and other cards
Cards lose money all the time, it's part of the game
@nappthea @mtgBouncerman @commandcast that COULD be beneficial if you need it, you're still likely not going to hold value long term as cards are reprinted in newer arts and better conditions, and even as stronger versions are printed of your cards (powercreep sucks and WOTC keeps pushing it)
3/4
@barret_oblivion@commandcast of playing an evolving game is that your game pieces may get worse, or be removed. It sucks for the people that can't use these cards anymore, and i definitely feel for them, but at the end of the day they are game pieces with no inherent value beyond your experiences with them
@barret_oblivion@commandcast I think if Wizards banned them people would feel the exact same way. Grief and Fury were printed in MH3 with Borderless art despite Fury being banned in Modern already, and Grief being shortly banned in Legacy AND Modern.
Value is hypothetical until it is gained. The risk 1/2
@sweet_sailin @commandcast have a distinct cost (color requirements, CMC etc.) and are much more often foreshadowed in a game. They also present clear and active advantage and threats in a way a Lotus or a Crypt simply did not.
at least that's my take on it, and what I imagine the RC thinks as well
3/3
@sweet_sailin @commandcast they were cards that dramatically increased deck strength for zero cost. It increased the sort of "pub stomping" behavior that discourages newer people, and ultimately that was too much for the RC
MLD, bombs, and other stuff are definitely strong and unfun, but generally 2/?
@commandcast I really feel for the player who may have picked one of these cards up a month ago and can't refund it, and didn't have enough time to really play with it to make the expense worth it
but unfortunately strong cards can be banned, and as noted by yall, these were strong cards
@commandcast I get that point Josh is trying to make but it feels rather disingenuous as people are conflating the "hypothetical" value of what you CAN get with the "real" value of what the cards would be sold at
the large majority of people who would "lose 300$" were not selling these cards
