The most expensive painting ever sold at auction began as a forgotten artwork nobody thought was extraordinary.
In 1958, a battered image of Christ holding a crystal orb and raising one hand in blessing sold for about $1,175, carrying the modest label Salvator Mundi, Latin for “Savior of the World.”
For decades, it was treated as a work after Leonardo da Vinci, meaning people believed it came from a follower, copyist, or later admirer rather than the master himself.
Then, in 2005, a group of art dealers found the damaged painting at a small Louisiana auction and paid around $10,000, suspecting that something far more important might be buried beneath centuries of grime, repainting, and rough restoration.
As conservators removed later additions, the hidden face, curls, hand, and strange glass orb began pulling the painting into the center of the art world, where supporters argued that a lost Leonardo had been hiding in plain sight.
In 2017, Christie’s sold Salvator Mundi for $450.3 million, and then the painting vanished from public view again.
