When I was younger, I watched a lot of my teammates sacrifice their dream of playing college baseball or professionally.

We all hung out.
We all practiced.
We all wanted to chase girls.

It was that age where our hormones started kicking in.

In fact, we would go to the mall...just to get phone numbers.

And, you would get clowned if you didn't get any numbers.

One day, one of my mentors, a shortstop at UC San Diego, from my hometown, pulled me aside and gave me advice I'll never forget.

He said:

"You'll have time for girls later.

Right now, your girlfriend should be the gym."

Then he smiled and said,

"Oh yeah... if you become a really good player, there will probably be plenty of girls chasing you later anyway." 😂

I listened.

He was 100% right.

Instead of chasing distractions...

I chased my dream.

Looking back, he wasn't telling me to avoid relationships.

He was teaching me about priorities.

That conversation stayed with me all the way to the major leagues.

Now let me pass that same advice down to you.

If you're a talented player, ask yourself one question before making a decision:

"Will this move me closer to my dream... or farther away from it?"

If the answer is farther away...

It's probably a distraction.

Because there's one thing I learned playing this game;

Protect your dream.

You'll have plenty of time for everything else.
