East Washington Academy students in Mrs. Bergrens and Ms. Miller’s first grade classes learned more about the Underground Railroad, slavery, and the Quaker community by visiting the Levi and Catharine Coffin House this week.

Last week, students from Mrs. Bergren’s and Ms. Miller’s first grade high ability classes visited Mad Jax maker space in Muncie. We learned about being a life-long maker and with help, made keychains from a 3d printer, laser cutter, and heat printer. It was so much fun!

EWA high ability first grade students in Mrs. Bergren’s and Ms. Miller’s classes loved interviewing author Sarah Aronson about her profession and her book, Just Like Rube Goldberg. It was so much fun and we all want to write our own books now!

EWA students in Ms. Miller’s high ability first grade class made origami frogs, then tested them to see how far they jumped. They made predictions, collected data, and recorded their observations. It was fun learning!

Ms. Miller’s second grade high ability class interviewed children’s author Sarah Aronson on Tuesday. She read her book Just Like Rube Goldberg and inspired all of us to be authors!

Ms. Miller’s super second grade students at EWA celebrated Albert Einstein’s birthday and Pi Day by working on fractions with pie charts and eating pie!

Ms. Miller’s high ability first grade class met Rob the builder yesterday. He shared details about his job as the construction supervisor for CORE Construction, the company that is renovating EWA. We also learned about the education and skills he needs to do his job. Thanks Rob!

This week we’ve been studying fiction and non fiction books and reading different stories about cows. Today we make real butter from whipping cream and learned that it is hard work but delicious!

Mrs. Bergren’s and Ms. Miller’s high ability first grade classrooms at EWA recently presented Country Mouse and City Mouse partner plays. We are so proud of all of our students for their hard work! Way to go Wildcats!

Our class is presenting research on Passion Projects today. We’ve been learning about Madame CJ Walker, Louis Vitton, why the sky is blue, how snow falls, and the most dangerous animal. I’m so impressed by their hard work and new knowledge! Way to go!

Ms. Miller’s awesome second grade students at EWA had fun at Camp Adventure Tuesday. We learned about nature and pollinators and built trust on the ropes course. A big shout out to Mrs. B, Mr. K, and Mrs. Jared for their help!

Second grade students at EWA received a generous donation of books from former Purdue and NFL player, Kelly Butler. The books, written by minority authors, focus on a positive message of self-worth and believing in yourself regardless of skin color.

First grade students learned how to make slime using a recipe that they used math to double (and that included fractions)! Way to go learners!

EWA Kindergarten students LOVE reading books about the little Westie named Meli in Fountas and Pinnell books. They practiced writing a letter and are hoping for her to write back. 🥰
