In his humble/generous acceptance speech for Best Actor Oscar for the 1965 comedy “Cat Ballou,” Lee Marvin told the cheering audience:
“There are too many people to thank for my career. Half this award belongs to some horse out in the Valley. Thank you," referring to the iconic shot in the film of Lee Marvin and the horse he’s on, both drunk, leaning against a wall.

Screen legend Gregory Peck (The Big Country, To Kill a Mockingbird) stars as General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most controversial public figures of our time. In 1942, with his position in the Philippines made hopeless by Japan’s destruction of more than half the planes in his Far East Command, MacArthur leaves pledging, “I shall return!” MacArthur does return with riveting victories in the Pacific and the deft handling of the democratization of Japan. He is also armed with Presidential aspirations. While serving in Korea in 1951, his colossal ego and insubordination result in dismissal by President Truman. MacArthur is a compelling story which explores the many facets of his ambitious character and clearly demonstrates his brilliance as a strategist, his lust for publicity and flair for dramatics.
We say goodbye to our founder, the visionary Ted Turner. Ted’s love of classic films inspired him to create a channel dedicated to preserving them. He considered TCM one of his greatest accomplishments.
His passion continues to inspire us all as we work to fulfill his mission.

Brand New HD Master - From a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative! The iconic Sidney Poitier (Lilies of the Field, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner) stars in this gripping 1969 drama of street-style crime and justice. The secretive leader of a Black militant group, Jason Higgs (Poitier) plots a dangerous payroll robbery; the money is marked for a mysterious organization that benefits the children of jailed Black men. When the heist goes horribly wrong, Higgs and his men go on the run, with the entire Philadelphia police force following their every move. The captivating Joanna Shimkus (Boom!), Poitier’s future real-life wife, plays a social worker who helps, and falls in love with, Higgs. Marked by late-Sixties racial tensions, this loose adaptation of F. L. Green’s novel Odd Man Out was scripted and directed by Robert Alan Aurthur (co-writer of For Love of Ivy and All That Jazz); featuring Paul Winfield (Sounder) and music by the great Quincy Jones (In the Heat of the Night).

This portion of the movie section from a 1966 edition of The New York Times indicates just a portion of how many fine movies were in release during a single week. Among them: "The Ipcress File", "Thunderball", "Darling", "The Hill", "The Slender Thread", "A Patch of Blue", "Bunny Lake is Missing", "Viva Maria!", "The Pawnbroker" and a Beatles double feature: "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!". Those really were the days!
