They were followed by an enthusiastic open-floor discussion. Major ideas that came up were: human beings as a geological force, the wide adoption of modernity, the merits of 'planet' vs 'globe', history's human-ward tilt, and the appropriateness of the anthropocene as a new epoch

The participants problematized the title & the subtitle of the book which changed with editions. The chapterization of the book based on cities of significance to the third world project saw discussion. The trajectory of the politics of the third world was analysed in the session
For our 4th session, we took up @vijayprashad 's 'The Darker Nations: People's History of Third World'. Chaired by @madhurimakvs, discussants @plphanase and Prof. Jayati Srivastava critically delved into the idea of 'third world project', from conception to its purported decline.

Some of Scott's key contributions including the notion of everyday resistance and the centrality of taxation in the quest of the state to render societies legible have also been commented upon during the session.
We had an engaging 3rd session in the current edition of the book discussion series, with @Madhulika963 and @SantanaKhanikar leading the discussion on James Scott's 'Seeing Like a State', on 27th September.
The session, chaired by @George_Ohh, saw a critical engagement with the book's primary thesis that states simplify and force 'legibility' on local societies, ignoring valuable localised knowledges in the process.

The evolving contours of Modern strategy, Lessons from history, Non-western perspectives & the 'Tech-geopolitics-ideology' nexus shaping global power dynamics were the major themes in focus. #TheNewMarkersOfModernStrategy
In the previous session on August 30th, we discussed 'The New Makers of Modern Strategy', edited by Hal Brands. We had an enriching session led by @rawatra10, @plphanase and @RRajagopalanJNU, chaired by @oorjatapan, and followed by an engaging open floor discussion.
The degradation of mental health at a social level, the rise of the smartphone, and the lack of supervision on its use by children were prominent themes during the discussion.
For the first book discussion in our second series, we took up @JonHaidt's "The Anxious Generation" on the 5th of August. We had an animated session led by Nayana Khatri and @SwaranSinghJNU, chaired by @jagmansingh18, and followed by a lively open floor discussion.
