On the morning of May 24th, 1941, the Bismarck, a prominent warship of the Kriegsmarine, engaged in a battle with the Prince of Wales and the HMS Hood, representing the Royal Navy. Tragically for the British, the Bismarck managed to deliver a devastating blow from a distance of nearly 25 kilometers, severely damaging the Hood.
In less than 10 minutes after the British opened fire, a shell fired by the Bismarck struck the Hood near its aft ammunition magazines, resulting in a catastrophic explosion. Within a mere three minutes, the Hood sank, and the majority of its crew perished, leaving only three survivors. The Prince of Wales, despite exchanging fire with the Bismarck, experienced significant malfunctions in its main armament, eventually being compelled to retreat from the battleship and the accompanying heavy cruiser, Prinz Eugen.
Although the Germans achieved a tactical victory in the battle, its overall impact was short-lived. Damage sustained by the Bismarck's forward fuel tanks necessitated the abandonment of their breakout attempt and an endeavor to reach dry dock facilities in occupied France. Consequently, this turn of events granted the British an operational victory.
The British public was deeply shocked by the sudden destruction of their most emblematic warship, which resulted in the tragic loss of over 1,400 crew members. In response, the Admiralty mobilized all available warships in the Atlantic Ocean to hunt down and eliminate the Bismarck. The Royal Navy forces relentlessly pursued the Bismarck, ultimately engaging it in a battle that led to the sinking of the German battleship on the morning of May 27th.
