I have been reading South African newspapers covering the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, won by Spain, and I believe there is a profound political lesson for Zimbabwe. Not a football lesson, but a leadership lesson.

Portugal had one of the greatest footballers in history, Cristiano Ronaldo. Argentina had another all-time great, Lionel Messi. Yet neither nation lifted the trophy. Both were eliminated by teams that relied not on one individual, but on collective organisation, discipline and teamwork.

Spain did not win because it had one superstar who carried everyone else. Spain won because it functioned as a team. Every player understood their role, trusted the system and contributed to the collective effort. That is what made them world champions.

There is an important lesson here for Zimbabwe’s opposition politics. No single individual, no matter how charismatic or popular, can deliver democratic change alone. Change requires institutions, rules, structures, accountability and a competent team working towards the same objective.

For decades, Zimbabweans have developed a habit of placing almost unlimited faith in one individual, whether it was Morgan Tsvangirai or, more recently, Nelson Chamisa.
They invest enormous hope in a single person and expect that individual to defeat an entrenched ruling party backed by the machinery of the state, including the security services and the military.

History shows that this is simply not how successful organisations operate.

No serious organisation can function effectively without a constitution, defined leadership structures, internal accountability and properly established decision-making processes. Even the most gifted leader needs capable deputies, administrators, strategists and institutions. Personality alone has never been enough.

One of Zimbabwe’s greatest tragedies is that educated adults, people with university degrees, careers and families, have often accepted the idea that a political movement can operate indefinitely without a constitution, without elected leadership structures and without internal democratic processes.

When concerns were raised publicly by respected constitutional lawyer Dr Alex Magaisa about the need for institutional structures and a constitution, those concerns were dismissed by many supporters instead of being debated seriously.

It is difficult to understand how people expect one individual, operating without strong institutions behind him, to defeat a ruling party that has controlled the state for decades and enjoys the backing of an established political, administrative and military apparatus.

The lesson from Spain’s World Cup triumph is therefore not simply about football. It is about the power of institutions over personalities. Teams defeat individuals. Organisation defeats improvisation. Structures outlast charisma.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi remain among the greatest footballers the world has ever produced. Their greatness is beyond dispute. Yet greatness alone did not win the World Cup. Both left the tournament in tears because football, like politics, is ultimately a team endeavour.

Unless Zimbabweans begin to appreciate that lasting political change requires institutions rather than personalities, constitutions rather than improvisation, and teamwork rather than hero worship, ZANUPF will continue to enjoy a structural advantage.

That is not intended as a joke or an insult. It is a reality that many societies have learned throughout history. Nations are transformed by strong institutions, disciplined organisations and collective leadership; not by the talents of a single individual, however gifted that individual may be.

There are one or two lessons we can learn even from those with whom we fundamentally disagree. One of them is the importance of organisation, discipline and teamwork. Those are qualities that should never be dismissed simply because of who demonstrates them.

🚩Prosecutors allege that he posted a self-recorded video on Facebook on 10 July 2026, urging Zimbabweans to join planned protests against Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 scheduled for 31 July 2026.
