Today marks the 63rd Anniversary of Africa Day. We honor the health workers across Africa who continue to sacrifice their time and efforts in the fight against Ebola & other public health challenges. Together, we celebrate Africa’s resilience, unity & hope for a healthier future.
On #AfricaDay, we celebrate the continent’s abundant strengths, resilience, potential & growing influence on the world stage.
The people of Africa have overcome the destructive consequences of slavery & colonialism & forged unity & purpose out of adversity.
The @UN is proud to work with African countries to build a peaceful, prosperous & sustainable future all Africans & our world.
#Ebola Bundibugyo virus update:
- So far, 101 cases have been confirmed in the #DRC, including 10 confirmed deaths. But we know the epidemic in the DRC is much larger. There are now more than 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths.
- #Uganda has reported two additional confirmed cases among healthcare workers, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to seven, including one confirmed death.
We are continuing to scale up the response with our partners, and we expect more cases to be identified in the coming days and weeks.
The sooner we can trace people with infections and identify their contacts, the sooner we can provide the care they need and bring this outbreak under control.
“Today and every day, the United Nations is proud to work with African countries to build the peaceful, prosperous and sustainable future all Africans – and our world – deserve.”

The Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) is one of the six species of Ebola and can be very serious.
But with the right preventive measures, we can reduce the risk of infection and protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.
Learn the signs and symptoms, follow public health guidance, and help stop the spread. Communities coming together can save lives.

𝐐: Are vaccines available to protect people against #Ebola?
𝐀: Vaccines are available for some Ebola species, particularly Zaire ebolavirus, which has caused several outbreaks in Africa. However, vaccines are not yet widely available for all strains, including Bundibugyo ebolavirus. This makes early detection, contact tracing, infection prevention and community engagement even more critical during outbreaks caused by these strains.

𝐐: Why is regular #handwashing important during an #Ebola outbreak?
𝐀: Handwashing helps reduce the risk of infection by removing viruses that may be present on hands after contact with contaminated surfaces or people. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect individuals, families and health workers during outbreaks.

Lassa Fever. What we must know.
While Lassa fever is a major public health challenge across Nigeria, Lagos has seen only a few cases so far. Thanks to swift medical action, these cases were rapidly isolated and treated, preventing community spread.
But to keep our city safe, we must understand how it spreads, our health sector orthodox and unorthodox must continue to be vigilant. Our communities must understand how to protect themselves.
Lassa fever is a severe viral illness that is contracted from animals to humans and then spread from human to human. It is primarily carried by wild and household rodents, which sheds the virus constantly in its urine and faeces.
Many popular bushmeat species also carry the virus.
How it is transmitted
▫️Having direct contact with infected rats urine faeces، saliva or blood.
▫️Consuming food or water contaminated by infected rodents.
▫️Contacts with surfaces، items and objects contaminated with the urine، faeces، saliva or blood of infected rats.
▫️Inhaling dust contaminated by infected rodents urine or droppings
▫️Once in a community, it spreads from person to person through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person.
Prevention
The path of Lassa fever is entirely preventable. By keeping food tightly sealed in rodent-proof containers, maintaining clean homes, and avoiding buying, handling, or consuming live or freshly killed wild animals, we break the chain.
Let’s stay vigilant, practice strict hygiene, and protect our homes, our communities, and our healthcare heroes!

The right to health is a human right.
Many migrants lack:
❌ Access to quality health services
❌ Protection from financial hardship due to healthcare costs
To achieve #HealthForAll, we must ensure that everyone can exercise their right to health without discrimination of any kind. https://t.co/JUIoVTdnvp
