Ten years ago I was embarking on my @EdTechMA_UCL and being guided by the brilliant @thinksitthrough. This week it’s a new course launching in days for #coronavirus and today I became Head of Learning at the most brilliant company @FutureLearn woah. 🔥
@mattjenner@EdTechMA_UCL @thinksitthrough @FutureLearn congrats Matt on the new job and thanks for the new course, I've just sent it round at City (Mike)
Moodle Issues 13th Jan 2020 Some users may have experienced service degradation on Monday 13th January between 11:20am and 12:00pm and then again between 12:30pm and 1:50pm. This was due to server failure at an external service provider. We apologise for the disruption.
@RichardM_Walker@duncanmaciver@julievoce @RianneMacArthur @UCISA_DEG very true ... it's revealing when the first time you are aware of an outage it's because of a user reporting it and not the vendor telling you!
@RichardM_Walker ha! interesting, everyone is saying SaaS avoids downtime for upgrade but I wonder how often that is true. we've dealt with various 'can you copy our modules to another moodle' requests over the years. Sucks.
A5: not relating to Moodle but for other services I manage which have moved to external/SaaS, I needed to develop skills in supplier relationship management #UcisaVLE
A4: -ves - self-hosting relies on key individuals with particular skillsets, so big exposure risk. also weekend upgrade outage is proving hard to manage #UcisaVLE
to expand on that ... we run server monitoring (@newrelic), use direct access to Moodle DB for queries and reporting, have integrations with student records. also looking to so SSO ... so, going external may threaten all that
A3: self-hosting feels like we have more control, could just be perception tho, also fear of change and potential costs of external hosting/SaaS #UcisaVLE
A2: only benefit we would seek is no downtime for upgrade but last time we looked at external that still wasn't an option. would also want to make sure we still had same level of access to servers #UcisaVLE
A1: we had a strong IT department with experience of hosting ... interestingly most of our other services are now SaaS, only things we still in-house are SITS and Moodle #UcisaVLE
