I am truly honored and humbled to serve as the next executive director for the @CityofMiamiCIP . I will have some big shoes to fill in the absence of retired Director Beamud. I will look to build on the great legacy and foundation she has built. Thank you to Mayor @FrancisSuarez
@SuarezMiami@DavidOvalle305 It’s ok, as our A/D @rwjacobsjr says: we don’t have time to “talk” about reform we are too busy “implementing” reform. But it’s always great to have conversation, kudos to those who showed up and gave insight. #policeaccountability

@Mermaid_Tamer@GaryNelsonNews @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami That depends if the subpoena needs to be expanded via extrajudicial territory, which can come at an additional cost.
@Mermaid_Tamer@GaryNelsonNews @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami The cost is high, mainly because of police union defense, not because of the charge itself. But that’s a different story entirely.
@Mermaid_Tamer@GaryNelsonNews @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami I disagree. Typically in other jurisdictions, subpoening subject officers is a fruitless endeavor that comes at a high cost monetarily. Although it be nice to have in theory, the CIP still operates well in its absence. But this is ones man opinion. Yet we didn’t lose it entirely.
@SuarezMiami@Mermaid_Tamer @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami I would say he was the sponsor of our ordinance revision, saved it, and ushered it to a passing vote.
@Mermaid_Tamer @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami We still have subpoena powers, we just cannot subpoena officers that are the subject of a complaint. Witness officers and evidence are still fair game. We just subpoenaed UM in December on a case involving double dipping.
@Mermaid_Tamer@GaryNelsonNews @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami We never lost subpoena power. However, it was restricted a bit by the FL Supreme Court. Yet, it is still maintained in part via home rule.
@Mermaid_Tamer @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami @kenrussellmiami has been a big supporter of the CIP during his time as an elected official. We appreciate his unwavering support and hope it continues in the future.
@Mermaid_Tamer @kenrussellmiami @CityofMiami The CAB another board the CIP resources provides insight to the DOJ for only “officer involved shootings” the board has opined in other matters of use of force, implicit bias trainings, and body worn cameras in the past, yet the city attorney and others restrict their impact
@SouthFloridaPBA@DLCAVA She apologized. Hopefully you now will follow her lead, apologizing when necessary when bad cops, do bad things. If not, well, hopefully one day we are watching you. 👀 @doug_hanks@MiamiHerald
Even during quarantine the CIP has been meeting. We consider our work essential. Please view our meetings locally on channel 77, or livestream from our website.
