How do refugees and host communities define peace?

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is the ability to live in safety, earn a livelihood, access justice, educate your children, put food on the table, and participate meaningfully in your community.
Today, @RCKKenya convened representatives from the @ImmigrationDept , @NCIC_Kenya , @hope2shine @relon_kenya , community-based organizations, religious leaders, humanitarian partners, and host communities to validate a study examining the applicability of the Global Peace Index within refugee-hosting contexts in Kenya.

The study highlights that while many respondents reported improvements in peace and security and felt safe within their communities, peace is experienced through much more than the absence of violence. For refugees and host communities, lasting peace is closely linked to physical security, economic opportunities, access to justice, education, food security, legal documentation, social cohesion, environmental sustainability, and psychological well-being.

The validation also highlighted emerging challenges that threaten social cohesion, including declining humanitarian assistance, unemployment, unequal access to livelihood opportunities, and growing competition over scarce resources.
As part of the validation process, stakeholders reviewed the proposed Refugee Peace Index (RPI), a people-centred framework designed to complement existing peace measurements by capturing the lived experiences of refugees and host communities.

Key recommendations emerging from the discussions include
✅Strengthening livelihood opportunities and self-reliance programmes for both refugees and host communities.
✅ Improving access to legal documentation, justice, and protection services.
✅ Enhancing transparency and fairness in humanitarian assistance.
✅ Promoting inclusive implementation of the Shirika Plan through meaningful community participation.
✅ Investing in local peacebuilding mechanisms that foster trust, inclusion, and shared prosperity.

Building sustainable peace requires listening to the voices of those who experience it every day and ensuring that peace is measured not only by the absence of conflict, but by the presence of dignity, opportunity, and hope for all.
