Today marks the 40th anniversary of the passage of Proposition 51, a landmark measure championed by CJAC that tipped the scales of California's justice system towards fairness.
Forty years later, the commitment to a fair and accessible judicial system remains as important as ever. We honor this anniversary by maintaining our commitment to a fair justice system that serves all parties with integrity and a singular focus on justice.
Jaime Huff, President and CEO of @CivilJusticeCA, released the following statement after the Senate Judiciary Committee held #SB982 (Wiener), a deeply flawed proposal that would have driven up costs, destabilized California’s fuel market and made life even harder for families already struggling under the state’s affordability crisis:
“Senators drew a hard line for their constituents, stopping a reckless bill that would have driven up costs and risked fuel shortages and gas lines. Californians need affordability relief, not more economic self-sabotage.”
At a time when California faces serious budget pressure, AI is driving investment, jobs, and critical tax revenue. Rushing broad, litigation-heavy regulations under political pressure risks turning one of our strongest economic engines into the next lawsuit gold rush.
Governor Gavin Newsom should continue taking a measured, thoughtful approach. California can lead in responsible AI governance - but smart oversight must protect consumers without driving innovation, investment, and jobs out of state.

Excessive litigation and shakedown lawsuits are crippling California’s economy. Today, Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) released its Economic Impact of Lawsuit Abuse report, proving what we already know: excessive tort costs and massive nuclear awards hurt consumers, small and large businesses, and the economy. “Lawmakers have allowed billboard lawyers' abuse of the legal system to flourish, effectively imposing a hidden $2,500 tax on every Californian," said Jaime Huff, President and CEO of the Civil Justice Association. "Lawmakers can solve California's affordability crisis and lower the cost of living, but they have to start with fixing a civil justice system that has allowed billboard lawyers to drive up everybody's costs."

Los Angeles is now the toughest city in the U.S. for civil litigation — and Jaime Huff of the Civil Justice Association of California is calling out how “nuclear verdicts” are driving up costs and hurting small businesses. https://t.co/uIzpRI3m2R
Los Angeles was just named the number one #JudicialHellhole in the country - and Californians are paying an annual $2,500 lawsuit tax due to billboard lawyers' weaponization of the judicial system.
If lawmakers are serious about lowering costs on everyday goods - like groceries and gas - they need to tackle lawsuit abuse.
