Students at Maulana Azad National Urdu University raised their voices demanding justice for Maulana Tausif Raza Mazhari, a resident of Bihar
#JusticeForTausifRaza
A 30-year-old cleric, Tousif Raza Mazhari, returning from an Urs in Bareilly, was allegedly beaten brutally by a group of intoxicated men and thrown off a moving train, an assault that ultimately cost him his life. His wife’s account of the final moments is chilling. A desperate call for help, a man pleading his innocence, and a compartment full of silence.
Yet, despite this, the initial response leans towards calling it an accident.
If a victim is on a video call, saying he is being attacked, naming the violence as it unfolds, what exactly remains “accidental” about his death?
This is also not an isolated incident. India’s trains have repeatedly become sites of unchecked mob aggression.
The pattern is becoming impossible to ignore. When a bearded Muslim man can be beaten inside a public train, accused without proof, denied help by fellow passengers, and then reduced to an “accident” in official language, it reflects a deeper moral and institutional failure. This is not just about one killing, it is about a system where Muslim lives are increasingly treated as expendable, where violence is rationalised, and where justice is expected to wait while narratives are managed.

I travelled to Darbhanga, Bihar, and spoke to the family of 65-year-old Abdul Salam, who was killed on March 1 during Ramadan while fasting.
His family alleges he was attacked after objecting to communal slurs being hurled at Muslims in his neighbourhood. They say he was on his way to open his shop when he was assaulted with an iron rod and killed on the spot.
Main accused Manish Kumar Ram has been arrested, but the family is still demanding the arrest of all those involved and strict action.
“They killed him just for speaking up,” his son told me.

After nearly six years in jail, Sharjeel Imam has been granted a 10-day interim bail by a Delhi court. He was released from Tihar Jail to attend his brother’s wedding. Imam was arrested in January 2020 in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy case linked to the northeast Delhi violence.

Fatima Sheikh, a forgotten pioneer, helped establish India’s first girls school in 1848. Her bravery in educating marginalized communities and supporting the Phules in their struggle remains overlooked. Her legacy reminds us of the vital role Muslim women have played in shaping a just society.
